Where is the best place to stay?
Want to be centrally located to the best activities bc the outer banks cover such a large area.
7 year old boy, 2 year old girl. 1 week.
Probably going to want a pool to entertain 2 yr old.
What are the do's and do not's?

Are you looking for a hotel or a house? There are not a lot of hotels on the outer banks; I assume you mean NC and the Nags Head/kill Devil Hills area.

Prefer a house...just don't know where is a good spot.

Stay in Kill Devil Hills or Nags Head. Short drive to Wright Brothers, Jockeys Ridge, and Roanoke Island. Can drive all the way down to Hatteras or up to Duck.

There is really not a central spot where you can walk to a lot of attractions.
We usually stay at the Hilton Garden Inn at Southern Shores which is 15 miles and a 20+ minute drive to Nag's head/Jennette's Pier; where Hwy 64 intersects Hwy 12. I guess anywhere in that area is a central as you can get.

South of Hwy 64 there are some houses but most of it is the Nat. Sea Shore until you get to Rodanthe; and then there are a few towns with houses and small hotels until you get to Hartteras. North of Southern Shores there are lots of houses until the pavement ends at Corolla. You can drive on the beach there but a 4 wheel drive vehicle is recommended.

As already mentioned, "centrally located" is kinda hard to do.
When we went in 2014, we stayed in a condo on North Virginia Dare Trail, between east 2nd and east 3rd streets.
Easy driving access to Wright Brothers (you can actually see the monument from the rear balcony) and Jockey's Ridge. Not super far of a drive to Bodie Island Light and the attractions on Roanoke Island. You can drive to Hatteras, see the lighthouse and other attractions there, and be back by early afternoon.
Drive north to Duck/Corolla and do one of the jeep tours that go north of Corolla and see the wild ponies (there are a few if you take the ferry to Okracoke, but they are penned up).
Grab doughnuts at Duck Doughnuts one day for breakfast. High Cotton BBQ (where Virginia Dare Trail turns into Ocean Blvd) has some really good food.
Be sure to get a kite or two to fly.

When i go to the outer banks i prefer the less touristy areas like waves, salvo or avon in the south.
Get a house right on the beach and enjoy the solitude.
