Honolulu area? Head west for golf. Ko Olina was great. Kapalei is a little closer and has some nice courses. Turtle bay is on the north shore. House without a Key for drinks and live music. Get there about 40 minutes before sunset.

I spent 3yrs in military there, head north or west. I agree with Turtle Bay for golf, I always preferred the North Shore. More locals, less tourists. Pearl Harbor, Punchbowl National Cemetary, Diamondhead, and the north shore's Banzi Pipeline are all must sees!

renting a car is a must. driving around the island is awesome.

snorkling in Hanamau Bay is gorgeous. tons of wildlife in the water, including sea turtles.

can't go wrong stopping at the various beaches while driving along the North Shore (not crowded).

Other cool things include Pearl Harbor, Dole Pineapple Plantation (touristy), Waikiki Beach (busy), rainforests/waterfalls. If I could go again I would do more nature excursions and do a LOST tour

You really can't do all of the things I listed freely and practically without renting a car. But other people may have had a different experience.

Pillbox hike and Lanikai beach afterwards.
Rent a kayak and make your way out to the Flat island and the Mokes.
