last year we went to cancun early Jan, only thing available on our dates was an american flight, stop in IAH outbound (not bad) but long layover in MIA inbound (nightmare)

this year, similar dates, i booked the spirit non-stop, which spirit then changed after booking to a layover in FLL on the return which wound up being an 11 hour travel day.

what am i doing wrong here?
are there not regular non-stops MSY> CUN and back on decent airlines? i really dont care about cost i just want a non-stop flight thats reliable (this will likely be an annual thing for us, early-mid january)

No.

Spirit is your only nonstop option.

the spirit nonstop was great when it "was" a non-stop at booking. after i booked it they changed the return flight to a ten hour marathon

so theres only one non-stop flight a week to CUN on a real airline?

If you count Southwest as a real airline then yes.

Quick search I'm just seeing Southwest. You could go BTR-IAH-CUN or vice versa with United or American with a short layover.

just looking ahead for a trip in the future. is there a way to easily see when spirit & SWA offer NS flights to and from (ie: which days?)

just poking around with dates it appears that spirit NS flights are only on THU, for example? is it every thursday?

Generally speaking the spirits, allegiants, etc. of the budget airlines fly directs where no one else has a direct. So if they have a direct, you likely won't find another direct option, that's pretty much their entire business model.

SWA does non stop to Cancun in the summer. I flew it last year and have it booked in June/July currently as well.

Google Flights

You can put in the Departure and Arrival Airport and set the filter to nonstop.

We did MSY > CUN, then CUN > HOU > MSY on Southwest a few weeks ago and it was good enough

maybe it was my dates
we left on a Thu and returned on a Wednesday (originally was a Tuesday). The Thu arrival wasn’t flexible (and we did have the non stop) but there was nothing but pain available on the return flight no matter the day

I guess I’m just surprised there aren’t more options considering it’s a 2 hr direct flight to a popular destination from a popular destination

Both cities are largely tourist destinations, not major metropolitan areas that require connectivity between the two.

Not surprising for a city the size of MSY to be connected through a legacy airline hub rather than run one off flights between two non hubs that they have to fill with mostly local traffic on either end.

Correct answer. I usually set my departure and/or arrival for Saturday so I can take the SW flight one of the ways, and haven't had trouble with Spirit yet taking it the other way. I always have a refundable backup flight that I cancel when the Spirit flight boards.

so SWA non stop on Saturdays and spirit non stop on Thursdays. I can work with that. Thursday to Thursday is a week and Thursday to Saturday (skip one) is ten days.

Thanks all
