just read your review. sucks about your food experience. we definitely had a different food experience from IAD to CDG, even though we we had the old business class seats. We had poached lobster appetizer and the entrees we had were great, too.

We were disappointed as well. Flew the 777-200 from CDG-DFW last year and had a great experience. Just hoping it was a one-off bad day for catering and crew.

Flying KLM AUS-AMS-FRA tomorrow which will be my first time on their long-haul business. Hoping it goes well as the direct to AUS is more appealing than having to double-connect

We flew KLM back from Copenhagen through Amsterdam to IAD. It was not nearly as nice as the Air France flights. Then again, I was sick as a dog the entire time and we were in premium economy. At least the seats said premium economy though they didn't feel like it.

Your kids will be fine. If they get to sleep 5-7 hours, it’s worth it. It’s not spoiling them if it benefits you as well. The reverse corollary of George Costanza’s “it’s not a lie, if you believe it.”

It would help if you posted your home airport (maybe I missed it).

That made me laugh.

Based on his profile, it looks like New Orleans. While I would rather fly into Haneda than Narita, there is advantage to flying direct from IAH to NRT on UA7, as I've done plenty of times.

Especially with kids, you do not want to land in your destination country in the early morning in Asia. It's nearly impossible to keep yourself (let alone kids) awake until the sun goes down to transition time zones in one night. Landing in NRT on UA7 after lunch, taking the bus from NRT into Tokyo, you can unpack by 5PM and keep yourself and the kids awake until it is dark quite easily.

As long as your kids are polite, don't worry about spoiling them. Do they need a lay flat business seat? Of course not, but everyone gets to pick their meal and drink anyway, even in coach. This coming from a dude whose 8 year old was disappointed we were taking a "one story" plane back from Europe, rather than the A380 we took on the way there.

I just buy a Subway 12" before I board, and eat it around the meal times that United serves their meh food.

Japan next summer

I forgot to add, especially in Tokyo, if you think the heat here is bad, holy shite. You haven't seen much yet. Buy handkerchiefs.

Flying out of New Orleans, so hopefully somewhat prepared for the heat. It’s my daughters graduation present and basically the only window we have to make the trip with everyone’s schedule.

It’s real hot. Nasty hot. So just resign yourself to the fact that you’ll be sweating nonstop. Wear quick dry clothes, carry around a small rag to wipe your sweat and an umbrella for some shade and have the time of your life! You’ll love it!

Pretty much my life here this summer. Also went to Italy in late June and it was rugged there 90%’of the time. Wish we could go in the spring but that’s not happening.

I hear ya. My wife is a teacher, so we went in late July. It’s fricking hot, but it was amazing and I’d do it again in a heartbeat
