1. Looks like my phone won't work and I should probably buy a pre paid SIM card but it's going to give me a new phone # so it's not like I can receive calls on my USA phone #, so it would really only be for emergencies, I guess. I'm wondering then if I really even need one..

I use Sprint and had an international plan that was free data and $0.20 calls. Deal Deal Deal - cant help you on anything else.

2. We will definitely visit some of the public geothermal pools in the area in addition to the Blue Lagoon. These will be great activities to relax and trade off kid's activities vs. what I want to do. Do I want to bring slippers/towels/robes with me and waste luggage space (airline charges for luggage) OR rent/buy it there?

No they give you towels everywhere, but maybe flip flops. Consider Secret Lagoon in Fludir, there is a geyser going off behind you which is pretty cool. Bring nothing but a bathing suit or maybe flips

3. I read that pretty much everywhere takes Visa so there may not be a need to even change for Krona but we are going to rent a car and self drive the Golden Circle. If we do that I'm sure we'll make stops at smaller stores/stands along the way. Do you think they would take CC as well or should I exchange a few hundred USD into ISK just in case? Heck, at the rate the USD is falling (I'm looking at some charts as I type) I might just do this now to hedge my bets...

I brought some Krona but really didn't need to. Maybe the occasional craft store. $100 or $200 is plenty. Gas can be a challenge in some places in terms of the fact our CCs don't have PINs. You may have to go in and buy a gift card (and a hotdog - the national fast food!). But with money, by the end of my week I was purposely trying to spend the cash as I had not used any of it yet.

One thing I would add - very expensive. I don't mean like they say Paris or other Europe, I mean really expensive. Just get used to it. Only a handful of grocery stores. They have hotdogs and such as low end that is normal ($4-5) but there is little middle ground - it skyrockets up. Had several $200 USD dinners with no alcohol and not top end restaurants - just be cognizant.

My wife and I are going with another couple the first week of March. We were initially sold on the cheap flight to see the Northern Lights but after looking more into all Iceland has to offer, I'm getting more excited about going to check out the lagoons, glaciers, etc. As someone else mentioned, the TripAdvisor folks recommend you not rent a car in winter. So I started looking into some overnight tours to the South coast and they look good, but I hate the idea of being on someone else's schedule for everything. Plus, you're always around groups of people. Wondering if we should just rent a car in Reykjavik for a day or two so we can drive to the Golden Circle on our own and then maybe look into a tour as well. We only have four days so it's a pretty quick trip. Enjoyed reading this thread for ideas. Anyone that's been over there in winter, I'd like to hear how the experience was... Seems like it would be totally different compared to going in August.

Perfect responses - thanks for the info. I've roughed out a schedule for us, we are a family of 4 with boys ages 7&9. We are taking the red eye from BWI on Sunday night and arriving at KEF at 5:30 a.m. Here is what I'm thinking:

Monday - We are going to stay in Reykjanesbaer in a B&B near the airport right off of the water. See the sights there. I don't know what our jet lag situation is going to be be so I would rather take it easy, go to Viking world, a few geo thermal pools and maybe even the Blue Lagoon this day.

Tuesday - head to Reykavik and spend all day touring the city.

Wednesday - drive the golden circle. Maybe spin off to Vik and stay there on Wednesday night.

Thursday - finish driving and head back to Reykavik

Friday - leave the morning open for anything we missed in Reykavik and then fly out at 3:00.

Some time to decide but definitely want to have everything booked by Christmas.

Thanks!! Much appreciated.

I have my schedule pretty much settled and then I'll fill in the blanks over the next few months before we go.
Arriving at 5:30 a.m. on Monday morning. I don't know how the jet lag is going to affect the family (boys ages 7&9). So, I've decided to stay close at a B&B in Keflavik. Go to the Blue Lagoon, Viking museum, places around there.
Tuesday - Stay at the Radisson in Reykjavik.
Wednesday - drive the golden circle. Taking our time seeing the sights. Staying at a guesthouse in Laugarás.
Thursday - Drive to Vik. Staying at a B&B there.
Friday -drive back to the airport and flying out at 3:30 pm.

Family is really excited. My 9 year old has been watching youtube videos on learning Icelandic every night. Thanks for all of the tips and suggestions.

I old just head into Reykjavik when you get in. It's not that far from the Blue Lagoon.

Good stuff in this thread

Be really prepared for the prices of things, like a beer for $15

I was between taking a tour or doing it ourselves. I'll be traveling with a 7 and 9 year old and would probably prefer not be at the mercy/schedule of a tour bus.

the buses are full of gawking old people. I can't think of a worse way to travel. it's a country meant to be roamed in a car or on bike. make sure you don't hit a cyclist on the ring road btw. They're like gnats.

I can confirm, the food was pretty pricy, but not horrible.

That said, I had some amazing meals there -- Grillmarket was amazing, the fish is excellent. I also tried whale while there, which was interesting as it was more like red meat than fish.

Actually ended up being around $1,500 for 4 which includes a checked bag both ways and pre selected seating. Cheaper for us to fly to Iceland than back to Baton Rouge to see my family..
