We are going in September. Flying into Munich and heading over the Salzburg and the lake region including Halstatt. We've been there before and loved it. Then hoping a plane to Rome. We've never been to Italy before but here is the general itinerary:

Rome - 3 days
Cinque Terre - 4 days
Lake Como - 1 day
Venice - 2 days

Thoughts or recommendations are appreciated!

I'd cut back on Rome and Cinque Terre and spend a couple of days in Florence. I wasn't impressed with Rome. There are must see sights there but it's more expensive and Florence is just awesome. You might want more than one day in the lakes region.

I have been to all those places and loved them. Unless you are a serious hiker, 4 days is a lot in the Cinque Terre. The advice about a couple of days in Florence is good because it is near the CT. Otherwise I would spend more time in Rome where you will never run out of things to do or see.

Although I said that 4 days during this time frame may be a bit much for the Cinque Terre, it really is a spectacular place. When you walk the trails, take plenty time to admire the views of the Mediterranean and the hill side towns in the distance. The scenery is amazing. Our favorite restaurant was Gambero Rosso in Vernazza. It is by the harbor right across the square from the church.

Only reservation I've made are flights, so I have flexibility. Wife and I are experienced travelers but we're bringing my parents for my dad's 60th bday. He's never been outside the country except for Mexico and BVIs.

Our personal travel preference is more to experience the people and culture then to just run from city to city. We also prefer small towns to big cities.

By booked I took it to mean the flights are booked and the itinerary is open to suggestion.

I would definitely try and stop by Florence--some of my family members have been and they love it there

Did you book your flight from Salzburg to Rome? Why fly down to Rome then work back up to Venice? If go from Salzburg to Venice and work to Rome. Maybe even take a train?

Booked an award ticket with a free stopover and an open jaw, so I'm not paying anything extra for the flight.

ETA: I'll be able to use points for hotels in Rome and Venice, but plan is to use AirBNB for Cinque Terre and Lake Como. Let me know if y'all have another suggestion. We will rent a car to leave Rome, and return the car when we arrive in Venice.

No florence? You done messed up A-aron

And this is coming from someone who lived in Italy for a year. I think for so little time you are trying to hit too many places. But to each his own.

Just booked dirt cheap RT to Rome too. We have tentatively discussed:
Rome-3.25. Arrive late. Basically dinner & bed.
Florence (Day trip to Siena)-4.5
Positano/Amalfi-4.5

From most of what I read, you could do less time in Cinque Terre.

We spent a week in Positano around Easter 2014. We loved it. The Amalfi Coast is like the Cinque Terre on a much larger scale.
