I just got back from Cartagena and found out my mom and brother are dying a tour of Europe so I'm going to tag along for a week through Italy. I'll only have 7 full days. Flying into Rome and out of Milan. 21 to 30th of next month. This is last minute for a Euro trip. But I can't go too long as I have A mexican trip early November.
#enjoyingmydivorce lol.

That’s a quick trip.
My personal preference is Florence by a very wide margin over Rome.
Have you been to either previously?

Rome is a city best enjoyed by seeing everything and then just “being” for a few days, noticing all the history around you… which you don’t have time for. Get 2-3 nights in Rome, hit some major sights, then head north to Florence. Get 3-4 nights in Florence, then head to Milan for a night. Hit the markets and the duomo, including the rooftop, and call it a trip. I could start pitching extra stops, but again, you don’t have time. Italy is, you might notice a theme, best enjoyed slowly.

I spent a week in Italy a few years ago. Did 3 nights in Rome, and 3 in the Tuscan countryside. We did a day trip to Florence and hit all of the high spots.
I would recommend 1-2 days in Rome, 1-2 days in Florence, and the rest in a small Tuscan town.
If you aren't doing the Vatican you can scratch a day from Rome.

No. One week trips are my go to. I like to take 6 one week vacations a year rather than 2 or 3 2 weeks vacations.
Plus with my business I really can't be away long. Every time I leave out of town work piles up.

My current itinerary.
Possible revised Itinerary:
On 21st get airbnb in Rome
arrives 8am. We have place for stuff
Wander Rome to the 24th
Take train to Sorrento airbnb
See Pompeii and take ferry to see Amalfi coast
On 27th take train to Milan airbnb 2 or 3 nights
Decide on 2 1/2 hour train to Venice
Also see Lake Como and Lugano Switzerland (close day trip)
Flies out of Milan on 30th
They are doing Florence and the Cinque Terre before I get there.

Those are all wonderful places to visit, but I cannot imagine how you are going to do all that in 7 days.

Yeah. Middle to south to north in 7 days? Not my cup of tea for sure.
Posted on 9/26/23 at 7:19 pm to Napoleon
I would skip the southern part of the trip and head to Venice for 2 nights instead. Meet them in Milan on the 27th.

I’m that case 2-3 nights in Rome max, 3-4 nights in Florence, 1 night in Milan.
Florence is one of my favorite cities on earth. I think it’s magic.

This is a 20 day trip itinerary not a 7. Good lord man.
If you’re missing out on Florence and CT I wouldn’t even go. That’s by far my favorite places in Italy.
If Florence is out I do enjoy Venice more than most.
But with that short of time and your schedule id do:
2-3 nights in Rome, 2-3 nights in the Lakes, 1-2 in Milan.
Or cut out the Lakes and do Venice.

I just did Amsterdam, Brugges, Paris in five days. I don't try and see everything. Just an outline of the area.
Again I'd rather short trips then long trips. This is only one country I'm going to. I think I can swing it in that time.

So basically, you just want to be the guy who says, "I've been there."

I don't feel you have to spend weeks in a place to see it. I just want to see the sites.
Again most people take one big vacation every year.
Since last summer I've been to.
Chicago (4 days)
NYC (week)
Boston(3 days)
Destin (2 days)
Orlando (6 days)
Madrid (2 days)
Toledo (3 days)
Barcelona (3 days)
Amsterdam (3 days)
Brugges (1 day)
Paris (3 days)
Cancun 3x (6 days)
5 night Caribbean cruise
Orange Beach (3 days)
San Antonio (4 days)
Isla Mujres 3x (12 days)
Cartagena, Colombia (4 days)
Rosario Islands, Colombia (2 days)
But please y'all keep lecturing me on how I should travel like you all do.
Following Rick Steve's he says 2.5 days Rome and 2 days Venice and 1 day Como. I can do that.
Thanks for not giving recommendations and instead giving me shite for not taking 3 fricking weeks per vacation.
Most of the bums on this forum never leave the south.

You won't get to actually enjoy the places, you'll just see them.
And that's ok, everyone is different.
PERSONALLY, I do not like Rome very much at all, so seeing the stuff and moving on is fine.
I LOVE Florence (and Cinque), so if you are missing out on those, I would immediately plan a follow up trip to see Florence and Tuscany. I cannot stress enough how wonderful Florence is.
But the way your schedule is, like I said:
2 Rome
3 Lakes or Venice
1-2 Milan
Do something that at least has some level of logistical sense.
Your current thought makes NO SENSE logistically and you will be spending a shitload of time on trains and transport

FYI, outside of Florence, Paris is likely my favorite city. I have spent many days there and anytime its less than 5 days there I feel very shortchanged.
My past several trips to Europe have been see see see moving to 4-5 different hotels and I have hated them
Since you enjoy taking 1 week trips and do 6 a year...
Why not make this an Italy year.
3 separate one week trips.
One going South like you want to to Pompeii, Amalfi etc
One going north to Lakes or Venice etc
One in Tuscany with Florence etc

If you are headed to Sorrento/Pompeii as part of your trip, my advice to you is to train straight to Sorrento and see it, or Capri/Amalfi Coast, before seeing Pompeii on way back to Naples/Rome and the North. The slow Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento stops at Pompeii. You could go in the morning and spend most of the day there before heading back North.
We only spent 4 hours in Pompeii on the way back to Rome and regretted that decision.

I am also a quick tripper. That being said, I just took my first two week trip ever and I spent it all in Italy.
I hit the Amalfi coast, Rome and Florence.
Frankly, two weeks wasn't enough time. If I could do it all over right now, I would spend a week on the coast. THAT was what I dreamed Italy would be. Little family owned hotel on the side of a cliff. Amazing food everywhere I went. Little sleepy village cut into the side of a mountain. I had finally found a little bar right on the water to hang out in the day before I left.
Seeing the famous stuff in Rome was OK I guess but the crowds were insufferable. Florence was amazing but I still enjoyed Amalfi more.
