Is this a country you can safely use Air B&B or do you have to stay in the confines of a resort? What are the best cities/areas to stay in? I know nothing but it seems affordable. Thanks.

Ambergris Cay is very nice.

Mainland Belize is easily the most poverty stricken country I've visited. The average wage there is $1.25 an hour. We were driven across the country to the Mayan ruins at Xunantunich and it was depressing to see how poor the people are there.

Girlfriend visits Belize often, she said it's pretty safe.

Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker are safe places to stay. Ambergris Caye is a little busy, for Belize, where Caye Caulker is a lot more laid back. Flights have decreased significantly in the last year or two. Go and enjoy. I've been to several countries in the Caribbean, and it's my favorite place of them all. Lots of expats and everyone speaks English.

Where in Belize is that?

I've been and really like the place, but I've not seen water that blue abutting the mainland anywhere (you can take a boat to some outer cayes and find it like that, though). Nor mountains abutting the shoreline.

Does it usually take another small flight or boat from belize city to actually get to the nice resorts?

Yes. They're fun on old British prop transport planes -- until you see some of the "runways" they will be landing on.

12 minute flight to Ambergris Cay. When we took off from Belize City to Ambergris Cay the waves were crashing on the end of the runway. Not big waves but waves nonetheless.

Just go anywhere but Belize City. Placencia is a great beach town on the mainland as well. I lived there for a little while, let me know if you have any questions.

On most of the local flights, a passenger gets to sit in the copilot seat. I've been lucky to do this several times. These flight are about $65 each way to ambergris Caye and $100 to Placencia. Also the money is 2 Belize dollars to $1 American. Makes it very easy when buying items. Beer is pretty cheap. You can basically go anywhere and get a Belikin beer for $2 US.

I would advise you to go as each year it is becoming more commercialized. It has changed so much in the past few years as more people are realizing they can leave any local airport and connect at one of the major hubs and be in Belize in 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 hours.

Belize city is rough. Spent two weeks there on business. The people and food are great, but it is as third world as I have seen. The islands or cayes are awesome though. There is Nothing to see in the city, since rauls burnt down

Yeah Belize city is extremely rough. I have some pics somewhere I'll try to find. But I didn't wanna go back. The street food was good. Other than that it was a shite hole. I was honestly scared for part of the time

Some of you guys need to get out of your bubble a bit more, Belize is not a place one should ever feel scared for their safety, in fact it became a retirement hot spot for gringos decades ago.

Not Belize City unless you like living in a compound with razor wire on top of the fence. Belize City is a shite hole, plain and simple.

My house in orange walk had a 12 ft stone wall with glass shards on the top. We also had 3 guard rottweilers that roamed the property all night.

Orange walk is significantly more safe than Belize city.
