I need some Hawaii travel advice

We are planning to go to Hawaii next June or July. My wife, 2 kids (15 & 13), and myself.
1. Debating which island - Big Island or Maui (or maybe I can be convinced to go to another one)
2. Best place to stay? - we would like something oceanfront, with access to beaches/snorkeling, with a full kitchen - staying for around 10 days.
I would appreciate any advice as I have never been to Hawaii. Thanks in advance to the TB and thanks to Chicken for creating this board so I don't have to deal with the OT cesspool anymore.

We stayed on Maui and visited Oahu one day.
I've heard good things about staying on Kona as well.
The range of resorts on Maui right on the beach are all pretty good with snorkeling tours close by and luaus. Can walk along the beach on a pathed walkway to all the resorts and hotels and eat pretty much anywhere.
Cheaper ways to experience Hawaii include bed and breakfasts but with kids you are going to want the pools and amenities close by.

What is the family's idea of fun? The islands are different so that may help point one out. Eliminate Oahu for sure but consider Kauai as an option depending on what y'all want to do.

We are active, but like diversity - so beach, snorkeling, hiking, eating, waterfalls, ziplining, horseback riding, helicopter rides - all things we would like.

Maui is the best of the three islands i've been too

There are several high rise condos between the hyatt and westin on maui. Lots of low rise places around the grand wailea/four seasons on Maui
Not as much available, that I'm aware of, on Hawaii or Kauai although I prefer both of these islands over Maui.

We stayed at Aston Kaanapali Shores in Maui. Each unit has a full kitchen and it is on the ocean. People rented snorkel gear and were able to do it from there (of course, there are many other places you could go as well).
Might want to look into there, seems to tick all or most of your boxes.
You definitely need a car on Maui, you will do a bit of driving there.

We are going for 8-10 nights.
For Maui:
Where did you stay? What were the best activities? Best food experiences?

We stayed at the sugar beach resort and we loved it. Booked through VRBO and for a one BR (ground floor) ended up being less than $200/night (full kitchen, beach chairs, washer/dryer, etc). The beach was like 30 yards from our lanai. Snorkling wasn't too great right behind our resort but we loved the area. It was close to the airport and centrally located to bounce around quite easily.
Here is the unit we rented:

Our sunset every night from right off our lanai

With two teenagers I'd go Big Island.

I lived there for 3 years and I think in that amount of time you'd be crazy not to go to 2 islands. Occasionally there are direct flights into Maui or the big island, but I'd assume you will fly into Oahu. Unless you plan on returning, I'd highly recommend 2-3 days on Oahu and then go to Maui or the Big Island. Hit up Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, the North Shore, and Hanauma Bay. That can easily be done in 2 days and well worth it IMO.
Volcano National Park isn't mind blowing but it may be the only time you see a real volcano erupting. Its pretty cool, plenty of other stuff to do on the Big Island too.
Outside of that Maui and Kona are fairly similar but Kona has a lot less people and retail/ restaurants.

I think three days is probably a bit more ideal...at least one night you can enjoy sunset on waikiki and not have to worry about a 6am (or earlier) wake up for pearl or hanauama bay

Kauai is beautiful, not as touristy ad Maui.
Maui is breathtaking as well but has become geared more towards tourist. They have a lot of the things you would like to do on Maui

Been to Maui twice and both times stayed outside Lahaina at one of the Kaanapali Beach resorts. Recommend you look here.
When staying on the Big Island, we stayed at a resort outside of Kona. I've never actually been to Hilo, which is on the other side of the island.

The big problem with Lahaina in my opinion is how far it is from everything else. If you want to just stay in Lahaina it's great but I prefer Kehei if you want to hit different parts of the island.
