How's My Plan For DC at Christmas?
Posted on 8/30/16 at 12:40 pm
Posted on 8/30/16 at 12:40 pm
Will be flying into Reagan about 1pm Christmas Eve. Was going to take Metro to our hotel in Foggy Bottom, but hear an Uber ride wouldn't cost more than $10 or $15. Is this accurate?
Dec 24th- settle into hotel, maybe check out White House Xmas tree at night.
12/25- Everything will be closed, so check out all monuments on National Mall and Arlington.
12/26- Air & Space Museum
12/27- Natural History Museum & Capitol
12/28- American History Museum
(Keep in mind that we may do 2 museums in 1 day depending on how we feel/want to see that day)
12/29- Newseum & Holocaust museum
12/30- National Cathedral & National Basilica
12/31- Fly out at 5pm
We do have a request into our congressman for a white House tour, which could happen on at any time and day during our trip. Wont know until probably November or early December.
Nights are pretty free. Figure we'll walk around Georgetown one night. Hit up Chinatown for dinner, etc.
Anything we should add? Tips for DC?

Are you taking kids or just adults?
I would recommend the National Gallery of Art and the National Portrait Gallery. Both are excellent.
One of the best things to eat in DC is a lobster roll at Luke's Lobster, which is close to the National Portrait Gallery and the Chinatown metro stop. Seriously, you must do this.
I would recommend eating in the National Museum of the American Indian - it has the best food of all of the museums.
The National Cathedral is okay, perhaps not worth a trip if you don't have a car.
I have a lot of recommendations if you'd like more. I spent a month in DC and lived in the Adams Morgan neighborhood.

Metro all the way avoid the potential traffic but consider walk from station to hotel with luggage. You can actually just walk into your Senator or Congressmen/woman office and give you some tickets but being that close to Holiday they may be gone. Ride the sightseeing tour bus(the red one)it'll give you a great sense of the city been there over 10 times and never knew all the nice areas they had to offer without it. Times Irish Pub near Capitol (Best Beer Battered Shrimp on earth) must stop for me everytime.

I would add a day/evening in Old Town Alexandria to your list. It's full of history and there are some cool tours. You can see Robert E Lee's childhood home as well. There is a ferry from the Georgetown waterfront that takes you there if you don't want to uber/metro.
I work in Georgetown/Foggy Bottom so I can make some good restaurant recommendations depending on your budget

I did US Mint tour in Ft.Worth where you walk around a catwalk type thing and watch all the money being made on floor below. Is the Treasury about the same?

Budget is pretty moderate, plus we're both on Keto diets, so options are limited. We figured we'd do stuff like Chipotle, burgers, salads etc.
Also someone suggested we use Uber Pool, which is a service in DC? They said it would only be about $3 or $4 a ride almost anywhere in downtown/national mall/foggy bottom area for 2 people, which is cheaper than Metro. Is this right?
Old Town Alexandria sounds cool. We'll definitely check it out.

Just adults. I've been twice as a kid. SO has never been

The Adams Morgan area is nice for adults, with lots of good restaurants plus coffee shops, places to get a drink, and interesting shopping.
Old town Alexandria is nice.
If you like the Air and Space Museum, it has an annex about 20-30 minutes away that has a lot of cool stuff including a space shuttle and tons of planes. I guess you'd have to take a cab.
Old Ebbit Grill is a classic place to eat close to the White House. They have good oysters and good brunch.
If you want specific recommendations in the Adams Morgan/Dupont Circle area, let me know.

I don't know keto, so my food rec's may not apply.
Newseum tickets are good for two days if I remember correctly, so getting them and splitting the Newseum up may be beneficial. You could do it on two consecutive afternoons with Smithsonians in the morning.
I second the portrait gallery. No crowds and lots of really cool stuff. Zaytinya is a good lunch spot for Mediterranean tapas. Its been great the couple of times I've gone, but I know others who have had it be hit and miss. Located very close to the portrait gallery.
I'm not really big on the National Cathedral, but do really like the Basilica. While in the vicinity of the Basilica Menomale is a really good if you like neopolitan pizza.
Other things to consider:
-Renwick Gallery
-Changing of the Guard at Arlington (might be something to walk over and see on Christmas day, the cemetery has wreaths out on the tombs)
-Christmas Mass at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle (where Kennedy had his funeral Mass)
-In Old Town Fontaine is a good French/Crepe restaurant
-In DC around Dupont Circle is a mussels restaurant called St. Arnold's. Great place for a winter night (basement bar) and happy hour is pretty good. Order the Alsatian mussels or the St. Arnold Mussels.

Check out Pearl Dive for oysters - oysters from all over the country, also serves Abita (14th Street, LINK /).
When you do Air & Space, check out 3D Hubble show if it is still there - mind blowing. (If you have motion sickness, maybe not a great rec. - wife got sick watching).
Someone mentioned old ebbit's below (now above) - where the "deals" get made, and their shrimp & grits is pretty good.
Overall, hard to NOT find something to do.
Also - Steven Colbert's portrait was hanging in the portrait museum (think that is what it is called) at one point - 2nd floor over the water faucet by the bathrooms.

Don't forget the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space museum at Dulles airport. You can store your bags there before you fly out

I don't want to snob, but DC has pretty good access to many good east coast beers (which are much better than anything Abita makes). Don't come to DC just to eat and drink LA things.

Definitely need to check out the Arlington Cemetery.

I just came from DC last week. There a ton to do in that city I wanna return soon. While I was there I ate at Old Ebbetts and Founding Farmers both of which were awesome.
I managed to both of these in the same day. My brain was fried afterward.
I did the Capitol tour through Bill Cassidy's office. His staff was awesome. It was an abbreviated tour due to the Rotunda and other areas being closed.
My White House tour was cancelled. It's really hard to get one of those.
I also did the Library of Congress. That building is gorgeous.
Try to fit in the Postal Musueum while you're there. It's actually pretty awesome. It's right next to Union Station.
I took Uber Pool a couple of times while I was up there and it was pretty cool.
I only took the Metro one day because I was intimidated by it but it was fine.

Definitely Uber it from DCA to Foggy Bottom.
You would only have to ride the Blue line on the Metro to get from DCA to Gtown/Foggy Bottom area, but I would hazard a guess that you probably would be doing some walking from that station because you are basically in the middle of GW University and Hospital.
Tiger Pilot has some good ideas definitely.
I would also say skip the National Cathedral.
I would absolutely advise you, if you have the time, to go to the Air & Space Museum out by Dulles. The one by the Capital doesn't hold a candle to it.
If you decided to check that out, you just take the Orange Line (which runs through Foggy Bottom) out west to the Vienna station. Could Uber from there for $15 each way.
At night the 14th Street & U Street corridor has a lot of great restaurants and night life. That's where the aforementioned oyster bar is.

quote:Right over the M street bridge is a place called Shop House. It's owned by Chipotle and it functions similarly except instead of burritos, it's southeast asian. It's really fricking good and priced like chipotle.

quote:not worth it imo. If you're in foggy bottom and going to most areas of DC, it'll be close to the minimum fare of $6.41 and then you don't waste time picking up/dropping off other people

Very valid point - however, once you lose access to some things, they seem all the better when you can get them again!

I live in Old Town, definitely worth a day there. Lunch it dinner at Landini Brothers or Fish Market is a must. Could even go to George Washington's house in Mount Vernon. It's right there and a great time waster.
Your museum itinerary seems good. Metro is ok, but uber is the way to go in DC, quick and can walk a lot of places as well.
Someone mentioned Old Ebbit Grille. Good choice. It's a staple down there. POV at the W is good for drinks with one of the best views of downtown.

Based on the hole left in my wallet by that place I'd say it is good for a "drink" (singular). Great views, but not where you want to go to tie one on. Winter will mean an early, quick sunset. Consider grabbing a drink while the sun goes down and then heading to dinner.
As for the other rec's mentioned, the pentagon tour might be cool for you to see. The building is extremely unique in its design, and clearly in its function. Has its own metro stop as well, and could be knocked out with Arlington (both blue line).
If you are willing to pay an uber a decent amount the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico could also be done (approx 45 minutes from DC if going against the morning/afternoon rush).
