Flying down to Guanacaste next month for the first time. Landing at LIR and the resort is about 20 minutes away.

Is it safe to just cruise around?

It is very safe. I haven't been there in years, but they used to call themselves the Switzerland of Central America.

I always felt safe, but we also stayed inside the gated area of Papagayo Peninsula...

Generally safe, scams exist though, i.e. fake broken down cars etc. Nonetheless, very safe to travel. Ive driven from San Jose to the coast, ubered around San Jose and did private transfer from Liberia to the coast.

Flew in/out of Liberia last year and spent a week in La Fortuna and papagayo area and never felt unsafe in all of our travels. Costa Rica is an incredible place.

Very safe. Was there in December.

Just don’t go off drinking alone in some rando bar and you will live and get to take your children home.

I was in Costa Rica in February. Drove from San Jose to Necoya. Stayed at a couple B&B's and ate in a bunch of small towns. Stopped at markets to get food/beer.

Costa Rica was great. A little Spanish will help, a lot would be great, but I never felt unsafe.

Eh, I don't know about the "getting safer" part. The cartels are trying to increase their presence.

I felt safer there than most places I've been.

That doesn't mean somebody won't break into your car if you leave stuff in it, however. But I never felt like walking down the street was an issue.
