I know Carnival is kind of like Walmart of the seas. I don't mind it at all, but would try Norwegian if it is nicer (same prices for a cruise out of New Orleans)

A step above but it's a small step. Honestly, until you get into the more expensive cruise lines you're dealing with a similar class of people on the ships.

I've been on 11 Carnival and 10 NCL cruises and I'd pick NCL over Carnival.

very similar IMO although I think the kids entertainment is a little better on Carnival but I think the food is better on NCL. What is the departure port?

NEw Orleans port. That is why I'm looking at Carnival and Norwegian. No kids for us

Definitely NCL for you then. Carnival draws the worst clientele out of NOLA by far.

I don't know the exact ships you're looking at but generally speaking out of NOLA NCL will have newer ships, better entertainment, more flexible dining (freestyle dining as opposed to reservations), better main dining room and buffet foods and from what we saw the only cruise line that has service as friendly and attentive as Disney was NCL (better than both Royal Caribbean and Carnival).

The rooms are a bit smaller but to me, that isn't really an issue. We literally go to the room to sleep, for secs and to get ready to go out. If we want to sit on a veranda we go to a public deck.

Just a thought...Galveston has some nice options as well for similar cost to NOLA cruises on nicer/newer ships. It's a few hours drive which sucks after you disembark but the Liberty of the Seas our of Galveston is an AWESOME ship and two can sail in the off season with the unlimited premium alcohol package for not too much over $2000.

I took Norwegian for an Alaskan cruise and it was fine, but maybe that was a function of cruising to Alaska?

My wife thought princess was significantly better than Norwegian, I didn't think the difference was that dramatic.

One thing I LOVED about Norwegian was the $100 per person flat upgrade to unlimited fine dining. As a single visit to the steakhouse or one of the other upcharged restaurants is like $25, I found this to be a great value since some of them were open for lunch as well. Besides the steakhouse, the Benihana type restaurant was awesome.

Yeah, I think departure ports and itinerary are every bit as important as cruise line in determining the clientele the ship draws in.

I have taken both several times and there is no question in my mind that NCL is in a class above Carnival. The specialty restaurants on NCL are very good. Le Bistro was our favorite followed by Cagney's Steakhouse and the Italian place. There are several others. We went on the maiden voyage of the Norwegian Epic a few years ago which was a Transatlantic crossing. That ship is state of the art.

Anyone got a comparison between the Carnival Dream vs the NCL Dawn?
I was reading that the Dawn just went through a major renovation and the Dream is about to go to dry dock for some work.
Was looking at these two out of Nola.

If Carnival is a Kmart, then Norwegian is a Walmart

The thing I love most about NCL is freestyle dining. I like going whenever and wherever I want.

Have fun on either line. Don't worry about other people.
