Help finding best airfare rates

My Dad is working in Montana for the next few months and he has come home a few times already. He said airfare usually runs around $600. I'd like to go visit him and see Yellowstone but I checked prices this morning and they are damn near $1000. Am I doing something wrong?

Do you have to fly on specific dates or can you be flexible? And where is "home"?

Google flights is the best way to search flights IMO
It doesn't search southwest though

Sorry, Ideally I would like to go for fourth of July weekend, maybe leave on that thursday and come back on a Monday or Tuesday. I know that's probably peak times so I can wait a few weeks if it drops the price a good bit. Home is Baton Rouge, LA. Trying to get to Billings, MT. Thanks in advance.

So you picked one of the busiest travel weekends and picked to fly within two weeks. Pretty much unless you are using miles they will charge you an arm and a leg. I saw $700 or so.

You're trying to book a ticket less than 2 weeks in advance from a small airport to a small airport = you're going to pay a lot if you want to go for the weekend of the 4th. I am finding roundtrip Wednesday the 29th- the 4th for around $600 on Delta out of BTR with decent times ($580 if you want to leave at 7am out of Billings on the 4th)
If you did the following Thursday- Tuesday (7th-12th) it's $549 on United out of BTR.
If you can go for a weekend in August out of New Orleans it's $473 on Delta for Thursday or Friday- Monday/Tuesday

I just looked at American's reward availability for MSY-BIL. The entire month of June/July is pretty much blacked out besides one or two days

Thanks for your help. This is great news.

Not necessarily the answer to your question, more so to your thread title.
I use the app skiplagged whenever I fly. It's the ol book a ticket from a to b to c and get off on b. It'll be a lower fare - you can't have checked luggage however. This search is probably useless for smaller airports but again, it won't hurt to look.

I've heard they flag you and may cancel your other flights or charge you a fee. I can see where this could make an airline or the Feds suspicious. Anyone ever had problems with using this type of travel?

So long as you don't make it a habit, I've heard that you can get away with doing it once. I've never tried it, but I guess if you were doing A-B-C and wanting to stop at B, once you got to B you could just come up with an excuse that you can't continue on that flight and will end up driving. If this was on a one-way ticket it would be much easier than a roundtrip as your return flights would likely be cancelled.

But if you have checked luggage, them SOB's are still going to C and now you're up shite creek

Oh yeah, this isn't an option at all with checked luggage
