So we leave tomorrow for Glacier and will be there until July 3, apparently Going to the Sun Road is not going to be open before the July 4th weekend (global warming my arse). Is there any other way to get to Logan Pass? I'm guessing not and pretty disappointed about it.

Not unless you hike up there from outside the park. Logan Pass is the halfway point of GTTSR and the highest point if I recall correctly.

You can always drive to Many Glacier on the east side. I know it’s not the same but it’s a beautiful part of the park and typically less traveled.

I would definitely take time to drive to many glacier. Lots of good hikes over that way. You can stop in browning, mt for an authentic res experience too. That really sucks the road is not open yet. It it an unbelievable experience driving it.

If you really wanted to get there you could park at many glacier, take the swiftcurrent lookout trail and hookup with the highline trail near granite park chalet. Really wouldnt be a bad hike once you get up the initial elevation climb on swiftcurrent. Highline trail is absolutely gorgeous. Not sure the trail conditions right now though.

We were going to be there from Thursday to Monday but I changed our plans when I saw the announcement about the road not opening until after the 4th. With that much snow hanging around a lot of the trails will still be socked in and unhikeable for the family. The waterfalls in the park should be raging.

Can you get into the West entrance without a pre-purchased pass? If so, what time do you need to get to the guard shack to get in? Will be up there at the end of July.

Thanks

If GTTSR is open, you have to have as pass to get in. Does not matter what entrance.....And good luck finding a pass. That aside, the only way in is to get in the park (past the ranger station/entrance) before the Rangers get there, or after they leave. I believe their work hours are 7am-5pm.
Last year we were in the park around 6-6:30am. This is also good because you have a better chance of a parking spot if you are planning on a hike.

I believe if you have any type of rental or reservation that requires you to use the road, then that qualifies as your pass for that day.

I have 4 nights in Glacier in late July. (2 in Apgar, one in Lake McDonald, one at Rising Sun Motor Lodge)
I called Xanterra to confirm. All of those lodges are on GTSR and those printed reservations will act as a pass for GTSR on those days.

I also have 2 nights in Yellowstone, and the same deal. Those passes overrule the new alternating day license plate entrance rules.

Just an FYI. Also, I believe you can "sneak" in before 6am or after 4pm without a pass.

You may only be able to do that from the east side. I read somewhere that they will have road construction this summer and won’t allow access before 6am.

The east side was closed at Rising Sun when I went in late August 2020. We got on the road early, made it to Logan’s Pass and hiked up to Virginia Falls and back in a day. Absolutely stunning. Wish I had more time there.

Where are you staying? We stayed in Spoon Lake near Columbia Falls and the drive to St Mary wasn’t bad at all. We left at 5 and got to St Mary before 7:30 twice no problem. Luckily we went the last week of June and the going to the sun road was completely clear and no fires that year. We got extremely lucky.

We were there in August of 2020 as well and it is the only park I ever went to that rivals Yosemite. I think often about visiting the east side of the park because it was closed by the reservation due to Covid. GTTSR is a bucket list drive for sure. This is an "average pic" off an iPhone from a "average turnout" on the GTTSR. Incredible

West side of the park is pretty too. Lots of nice meadows mixed with mountains. Polebridge, Lake Bowman, and Lake Kintla are worth checking out.

This cant be said enough IMO. Absolutely beautiful out there. I was memorized by the colored rocks in the water at the lakes.
