Downloaded Uber on my new phone for my trip to Miami. I realize Miami isn't in the USA. So maybe I should file this under foreign experience. But, these are my rides so far:

1) Nice enough guy. Clean car. Spoke no English. Tried to ask me one question in Spanish. When I ignored him he went back to driving. No problems. I rated him a 4* because he didn't speak English.

2) I got in her old minivan which was dirty. She immediately asked me a long question in Spanish. I said: I don't know. I don't speak Spanish. To which she said: No hablo en Englais....To which I said: Just drive....She then started talking to herself in Spanish and waving her arms in the air. She then turned up her Salsa music to volume 11 and waded into traffic. When we got to my meeting I let myself out of the minivan and started walking. I got about 10 feet and heard her yelling in Spanish. She was out of the van yelling at me. Because apparently her auto door close feature was broken. And she had to get out and go around to close the door. Which was very inconvenient for her. I rated her a one *. Uber sent me a text that they were refunding my money.

3) Hit the button at my hotel this morning. Message says a guy is 2 mins away. Then says the guy is arriving. I see him with his blinker on in front of my hotel. Then, he takes his blinker off and pulls back into traffic and disappears. Then the app says hes 4 mins away. Then 8 mins away. Then hes on the Interstate. Then hes 11 mins away. And then he stops somewhere. I try to Cancel but Ubder says I might get charged for canceling. So I wait it out. He stays stopped somewhere (getting a coffee maybe) for like 5 mins. Then he heads my way. Finally arrives about 20 mins after he initially was right across the street from me.

So, immediately I said: Dude, what the frick was that? And he starts screaming about how it wasn't his fault. That the app sent him to the wrong place. And I said: Hey, you're yelling at me. Don't yell at me. Just drive....of course this sets him off. He tells me (in some sort of Eastern European heavy accent) that basically I must agree to give him a 5* rating or he will cancel the trip. I tell him to get fricked. He tells me to get out of his car, which I do. He then tells me I am a piece of shite and that he is gonna call the cops. He says he can't have another "problem with his star". I tell him to leave. But he refuses. He is banging his hand on the console and screaming. Hotel person comes out and asks what the problem is. He calls the hotel guy a fricking **** and says he's gonna kick someone's arse. He finally calms down and leaves. I am 30 mins late now. I summon another Uber.

4) Within one min another car pulls up. Older Cuban gentleman who speaks good English. Car is clean. He pulls out into traffic without a word. Asks me if I have enough air. I tell him all is good. He doesn't say another word. Get's to my office building and asks me where I want to be dropped off. I tell him the spot and he pulls over. Says: Thank you sir, and have a nice day....I rate him 5* and walk into my meeting.

I have at least two more Uber rides to go before I get out of this virtual shite hole. I am sort of curious to see what happens next.

Miami is actually the only city on earth that I have had problems with Uber. Similar experience.

Everywhere else its been mostly fine.

This must be your problem. I've used Uber/Lyft everywhere from South MS to Eastern Europe and never had a problem that I can recall. My only complaint is some that don't like to use the AC nearly enough.

Is there a higher level of Uber? What is Uber Black? The app didn't give me that option. And I don't really want to pay much more. But in a pinch, in case I had a client or something with me, I might like the option to upgrade. But the only options it had given me so far are X and Pool.

Yep. It just depends on what is available in your area at that time.

UberX seats 4 passengers. It is the least expensive Uber service. Uber X cars are cars like the Toyota Prius, Honda Accord. Known as UberPop in Europe
UberXL seats 6 passengers. UberXL cars are SUVs and minivans. XL costs more than UberX
UberSelect is Uber’s entry-level luxury service that seats up to 4 riders. Select cars are brands like BMW, Mercededs, Audi, etc with a leather interior.
UberPOOL: Share your Uber with another Uber user and split the cost. Read more about POOL.
UberBLACK and UberSUV is Uber’s luxury service. Commercially registered and insured livery vehicles, typically a black SUV or luxury sedan. Black is the most expensive Uber service

I might see about trying Uber Select. But when the only options that pop up on my phone are Pool and X, does that mean that's all that is in range? Or do I have to do something in order to see other options?

Miami probably doesn't have the black car option. I think Miami in general just has shitty taxi/uber drivers. I have had a number of interesting experiences with both yellow cab and ubers.

All I will say is to complain to uber about each of the rides and they will most likely comp it.

On another note, if you see a driver taking a long time to get to you or he is doing something funny, just cancel and uber will almost always reimburse you the $5 cancel fee.

Totally should have done this. There were like 5 cars within a few blocks of me. And i get the crazy Ukranian guy who goes to pick up his dry cleaning before he comes to get me.

Next time I hit the button it was less than 60 seconds.

What I don't understand is why people rate drivers so well. Like, every driver I have had has been rated 4.5 to 4.7 stars. Which is absurd. The older Cuban gentleman is a 4.7 all day long. Perfect. But the Crazy Ukranian isn't even a 2.0. He belongs in an institution. I am curious about why riders aren't more critical. They need to weed some of these guys out.

Sounds like the Nola cab scene before Uber came to town.

The 5 star rating system is Bs that's why. It should be out of 10 or preferably 100. I mean you think about it and a 4 star is like an 80%, you give them a 100% which would be perfect. Most people just hit a 5 if it's a good ride and a 4 if there is a minor issue. Then they do a 1-2 if there is a major issue.

im pretty sure they are fired if they get under something like 4.5 or 4.

I don't know about Miami they probably have some areas with cabs all over, but most cities don't. That's where the app is great.

Ya, only real bad experience I've had with Uber was in Dallas. Had to get to airport during afternoon rush after a conference. I wait about 20 minutes or so for him to get to me, which was understandable due to traffic. I had selected UberX but he was driving a Mercedes. He then gets to me and says he can't do the ride at UberX prices and for me to cancel and hit select. Ya, not doing that, and now I'm short on time. He requests I cancel the ride. I say "OK" and take a cab.

Of course, I didn't cancel the ride because Uber would charge me the cancel fee and I'd have to explain this whole situation to get a refund.

I enjoyed his texts asking me to cancel over and over as I rode to the airport. Bad apples in every industry.

Yeah, Miami is the only city I've had issues with Uber/Lyft. Hell, I took it 15+ times in Mexico City and never had any issues.

That's a five star ride man. Taking a star for English seems kinda dickish.

The other stories are pretty bad.

I did OK in Miami. Even lucked out with Ubering to Homestead for the NASCAR race and back. I didn't wait til the finish, that might have been a nightmare.

It's called LUX, and I use it when we visit my 90 year old father in law and his high maintenance Brazilian wife.

Lyft is better in Miami than Uber. Uber LUX is fine although I did have a guy in an Acadia pick us up. I don't consider an Acadia a LUX vehicle, and the driver was not nearly as professional as the LUX guys that pulled up in black Surburbans.

I disagree. Noted that I am new to this program. But being able to speak English is actually a requirement of being an Uber driver. A good ride with no problems and a courteous professional driver is a 5. But, I almost disagree with that. I think a "normal" ride should be a four. And would only give fives if the driver went out of his way to make it top shelf.

But I realize that isn't the culture. Everyone rates five. And if something big goes wrong then it's a four. So you have crappy drivers running around out there with 4.5 star ratings.

I think the ratings should be more critical.

You take candy from strangers in cars? It's a wonder you don't end up being the feature at a porn shoot being passed around by a group of wild silverbacks or something.
