This is going to be a very broad topic/question…but it’s a start.
Myself, my wife and our 4 kids are looking to take a family vacation next May. Our oldest is graduating high school and we want to take 1 last trip together before he goes off to college. The other 3 kids will also be accompanying us (13, 11, & 3). So obviously it’s a wide range in ages.
We were initially thinking of Hawaii, but have since ruled that out due to a multitude of reasons including costs. Someone suggested Exuma, but I’ve got no clue where to start…so I started here.

Any recs for Bahamas as far as where to fly into? Where to stay? What to do? What to book? Why not to do, etc…?

Any help is greatly appreciated and I’ll monitor this thread closely to answer any follow ups or clarify anything. We’d most likely want to stay for 4-5 nights. Thanks!

We've done exumas a few times. It's really incredible. Try to rent a place in February Point, especially if you are renting a boat.
Rent a house with a boat dock.
Rent the boat from Brown's Marina (they let you keep it over night).

Recommended places:
-Man O War Cay (catch it at low tide, unbelievable sand bars) Pack a lunch and ice chest.
-Chat n Chill (most popular, but most crowded. Get the conch salad) Great beach.
-peace n plenty (next to chat n chill, less crowded, good lunch, and great drinks) Great beach.
-snappy turtle (great lunch and view)
-Blue hole for snorkeling (just to the left of snappy turtle in the hurricane hole)
-Hoopers Bay (swim with turtles, take some cabbage or lettuce)
-Blu on the water (can get there by boat or car, but dock is a little tricky, across from Man O War) More upscale restaurant. Great Food and view.

There are some other great places to the north and south, but I would not recommend going by boat. Hop in your car and explore!

Stuart Cove's Dive Bahamas

Best dive company I've ever seen. We did the swim with sharks snorkeling.

The kids would love Atlantis aquaventure and that’s a beautiful resort. I’m sure y’all could make a fun 4-5 days out of it. We just went in July as a stop on our cruise and really enjoyed our time there.

Definitely go to Great Exuma. I've been twice! It is amazing!

You'd fly into Exuma International Airport(GGT airport code).

There are a lot of VRBO homes located right on the water. Great Exuma is a very small island, you can rent a car and travel from one end to the other in a couple of hours - at most.

There is only one main road that traverses the length of the island, so getting lost isn't an issue and crime is nearly nonexistent.

The tropic of cancer is located there and is breathtaking.

there is quite a bit to do, and many properties have water sport things there- kayaks etc...

Chat and Chill is a fun little adventure- you take a 'ferry' from the mainland to Stocking Island. It is family friendly and there are a ton of very friendly stingrays who frequent the waters there because they eat the scraps from conch salad that is made there- which is delicious.

Santanas's bar and grill is located directly on the beach at the tropic of cancer and the food is INCREDIBLE and the water is amazing.

the only place with water prettier than the there that I've been to is Turks and Caico's.

My kids and grandkids love Atlantis. However on our last trip there it was incredibly overpriced, the staff was incredibly unfriendly, the food was subpar at best and the pool areas were not clean. I won’t be going back there again.

I love / hate this board !!! Reading this thread got me to pull the trigger on a house (Nemo House) on the beach between Moss Town and George Town for Easter 2024- 3/27 - 4/1.

Already booked flights and rented a 15 person van (9 of us going in total).

We have 4 adults and 5 kids (16,15,13,12 and 11) going and will be doing a swim with the pigs excursion one day. Was looking at this one LINK

This will be our first time to Exuma. Any recs for other things to do and places to eat?

You should supply a bit more information to get the desired focus of suggestions.

1. Do you want big resort, small lodge setting, or VRBO?
2. Do you prefer water slides and concrete jungle or kayaking through mangroves and enjoying untouched beaches?
3. Casinos and Crowds or Sunsets and seclusion?

It really comes down to what Bahamas are you talking about? Nassau is full of nice and enjoyable resorts where you can pick excursions off a happy meal menu. The out islands have the seclusion, untouched wildlife, and disconnection from the rat race that make us want a vacation to begin with.

I have my own preferences, and honestly the idea of staying at Atlantis just makes me depressed. But that is just me and I pass no judgement on anyone who prefers that kind of vacation setting.

But when you travel to the Bahamas, you really need to decide going in, what kind of Bahamas are you wanting to experience.

I don't understand the popularity of this. Our daughter and her friend wanted to do this.

5 minutes in, "this is really gross. can we leave now?"

Lots of pigs eating pieces of hot dogs from a stick swimming in crystal clear water.

You do the math, it is a recipe for grossness.

Yeah I'm with you on the "not getting it" for the swimming pigs thing. Something the kids want to do. Like a water petting zoo.

They want to take pictures with the pigs for social media clout. The various islands in the bahamas realized this and started bringing pigs to a bunch of them so they could cash in on the tourism.

10 years ago there was one island in the exumas that had pigs, now you can take boat rides from nassau, harbour island, etc.
