Do you rent a travel wi-fi hotspot when traveling internationally?

Last year when I went to France, I rented a travel wi-fi hotspot. I had read about it and thought it might be a good idea given the amount of data I might use using Google Maps to get around, translating thing if necessary, internet searches, etc.

It proved to be a great, great investment, as both my wife and I could use data/internet anywhere we were. It was a huge help navigating the Metro/Subway, googling restaurants and bars, things like that, instead of having to use the data on our phone which might have been prohibitive.

I'm going to Europe again this year, and where I'm going to the Hotspot is a little pricier so I'm thinking about just getting Passport or something from ATT, but the amount of data that comes with it is laughably small.

Anyone use these ever?

How much is it/who do you rent it from?

I've just bought a sim card when I needed it.

What is the cost? There are some pretty cheap apps some basically free that use the gps in your phone and pre saved maps to track where you are. They work really well, we used them 2 years ago. Besides that, I was able to find internet pretty well and easily.

How much is it just to get data on your phone? A limited amount is not that expensive. But if its pretty cheap for a hotspot, then why not?

We usually use Lyca mobile sim card. Its available all throughout Europe. I think it costs on an avg 5 euro per gb. I hate the customer service though.

ETA: We spend between 1 and 2GB per week. But ofcourse, you need an unlocked handset.

I burned through my passport data from at&t in a few days. Using maps, trip advisor, looking up places to eat, buying tickets, etc....

I came home to almost a 800 dollar bill after paying 150 to at&t for passport.

Bought cheap sim cards and popped them in my unlocked android phone....4-5 euro each that would last a couple of days. Made local calls and texted with the sims too.

Two years ago, my wife and I used AT&T passport in France and Spain for two weeks. We let everyone know to text us and we disabled incoming calling and only downloaded emails using wifi back in the hotel at night. With the unlimited text and using gps sparingly, we didn't go over the data limit. The above worked for us.

we usually rent a phone from some one at destination. Especially in Aruba, the rates for intl was brutal back then.

we usually get free text, internet and about 100ish minutes, depending on where we travel. rates vary.

I have used CelloMobile in the Dominican and it worked great. They shipped to my house before I left and included a prepaid label to return ship when we returned home. 4 of us got one phone, used it as a hotspot and to call home.

I just use wifi in my hotel, bars, restaurants, coffee shops. We also have the Verizon travel plan where we can use our plan for $2 a day in Mexico or Canada, $10 a day pretty much everywhere else. We rarely use it but it's good for emergencies.

I work outside the US and spend a good bit of time in the UK. The above is why I am no longer an AT&T customer and switched to FI. I previously just prepaid for BT wifi in the UK but was SOL in most other places.

Just got back from London. We signed up for AT&T Passport, but I used wi fi most of the time. The hotel had great service, and many pubs and museums had free wi fi (you might have to register; just use a throwaway email account). The Fuller's owned pubs offer free O2 Wifi hotspots.

A big data saver is Maps.me, an app that lets you download the app for London or another area ahead of time. Then you don't suck on data every time you need to check for directions. When you open it, it will show your current location.

Citymapper is a mindblowing app that gives detailed directions for tube, bus, walk, and uber. It's only for major cities like London and New York at this time. Save data by getting the directions for a location while in wi fi, then saving that screen. It will then pull it up w/o using much data.

Yeah do exactly as Twenty 49 does. I use wi-fi in the hotel in the morning and at night, that's when I call people at home. I figure out where we are going, what to eat, etc.

The pre-loaded maps are the way to go. I'm great with directions and most of the time I like getting a little lost anyway, but I've never needed anything more than a pre-loaded map for the cities. If you are in a rental car, most of them have free gps now.

$100/ week is not cheap but it's not terrible either. I don't think it's s horrible idea at all, I personally don't think I'd pay for it but I think
many would.

I know you said you have AT&T, but for those who have Verizon the Verizon international deal is insanely cheap all things considered. $10/day and you can use your phone like normal.

Work provides a hotspot for international travel. I use it a lot.
