Have an opportunity to spend about 5 days in DC over the 4th holiday.

Anything special or should I just scratch it and hit a beach further south?

DC isn't what it once was for the 4th. Those Beach Boys concerts on the mall along with the great American smoke out followed by the fireworks were some fun times.

Watched the fireworks show on the mall several years ago, and it was a pretty cool sight to see over all the monuments and buildings. Was really crowded, buy as are most 4th of July shows.

After the fireworks don't fight the masses to get out. Head over to Old Ebbits for their late night apps and drinks

Get there super early and go to the capitol west lawn. National Symphony does an annual concert there that ends as the fireworks start.

We used to walk to the mall from our apartment about 10 min...good times. I would never ride the metro or drive to see it. It's worth it, fireworks last about 20-30 min
