In ATL metro. This Summer I took the wife for a little 3 day trip to Asheville. We really had a great time just parking the car and walking around downtown from the hotel. No trying to get to destinations or parking or worrying about how much I drank, etc.

So looking for good locations within driving (10hrs) distance. Prefer locally owned shops and good food but more walk in and eat than reservations and get dressed up. So far I can think of Gatlinburg and Nashville and a little further maybe Riverwalk in SanAntonio. Would prefer it be decently safe so that kind of excludes NEW Orleans or Memphis or so I assume.

Any recommendations and areas would be appreciated. Unfortunately, right now with farm animals and work, all I can do is around 3 days.

Charleston.

Many people on this board think that you can't step foot in New Orleans without getting shot, but New Orleans is in a class by itself when it comes to this.

Well, I live near Nashville, so I'd say it has it all. Plenty of threads on this board for that.

We LOVE Brevard NC, so that'd be a suggestion. Nearby Hendersonville has a really nice little downtown area with some shops and restaurants.

Boone NC. And nearby Blowing Rock, which is even better! Checks all the boxes.

Chattanooga. Great little downtown area. Aquarium.

LOVE San Antonio and the River Walk, but that's probably not in scope for you and much further away. All of the above are 2-6 hrs. or so.

Jax/Atlantic Beach area...their beach isn't shite, but it's a walkable area.

St. Augustine is nice.

Huntsville has added a lot of fun new growth.

Pick any college town (almost) and you'll hit your spot.

Sarasota/St. Armand's Cir

Blue Ridge GA! Absolutely. Great area. We stay in cabins 1-2 times/year. Love it.

OP wouldn't have more than a 1-2 hour drive tops. Nice shops and restaurants.

Or, could stay in Amicalola Falls State Park Lodge and go visit nearby Dahlonega.

Greenville, SC if you’ve made it to Asheville already.

If St Augie is a little too cheesey for you, Cocoa Villag, a little further south is nice, with the added bonus of better beaches and side trips to Cape Canaveral.

Other options are Tarpon Springs, Dunedin, and Anna Maria Beach, all on the Gulf side.

I have a cabin in Cashiers but travel to Brevard area often to fish. What specific restaurants do you recommend there. I've never eaten at any place other than the Cardinal drive-in - which I love.

I’d wait and do San Antonio when you have enough time to drive around the Hill Country and hit up New Braunfels and Austin, too.

I may be biased but currently my hometown of Covington, LA.

Centuries of history (well, 2 centuries), interesting shops and A LOT of excellent restaurants … all walkable. Also, over 100 free live music shows a year.

Stay at the Southern Hotel.

Actually, we like to drive up to the Pisgah Inn. Maybe 30-40 minutes away. On the Blue Ridge Parkway. Great views and the food is pretty good. They have this Pecan Encrusted Trout they do that's amazing! We've stayed there before.

The "dining scene" is Brevard isn't much. The Square Root isn't bad. Can't remember the name of the place we used to go, but looked up the site and it's the Blind Mule, which got pretty good reviews.

Occasionally, if get tired of "Southern Cooking", we've gone to Sora Sushi, which is probably 5 miles from downtown towards the entrance to the Forrest. Pretty good.

I was going to say the same. I love that area, but it’s not exactly a hopping downtown with lots of dining and drinking like Asheville. We ended up eating at a hot dog place with disc golf baskets in the back yard last time we were there. Hendersonville has a bit more… but also not a ton.

I might throw out Oxford, MS as an option.

For the people saying Greenville, SC. Could you elaborate on where to stay and things to do within that walking distance? I've got Charleston figured out where to stay and St. Augestine. Already been to Savannah. A lot of the N. Georgia towns are cool, but small and I feel like a day's worth and we'd be done.

Greenville has me curious.

I stayed at the Hyatt on Main and just walked all over. Greenville was a surprisingly fun city.
