Looking for something upscale not far from the Navy Pier area.

if you are an adventurous eater the purple pig is one of my favorite meals ever. And, if you go to Chicago and don’t go to Chinatown you are missing out

Friend,

I agree with Purple Pig, which is better than the more popular Girl and Goat. Disagree about Chinatown, though. Best Chinese restaurant there is Sun Wah north of town. Get the duck dinner. It is the best Peking duck I have had in America.

If you can get a reservation at Alinea, do so. It is an unforgettable experience. It is not close to Navy Pier, but is a short ride away on the L.

I cannot emphasize enough not to eat at Navy Pier. It is filled with tourist traps, at least the last time I was there. Kastleburgers are better than Billy Goat.

There’s a Capital Grille nearby. The best pizza nearby is Robert’s, which is NY style (and no relation to the Nuevo Neapolitan Roberta’s in Brooklyn).

Yours,
TulaneLSU

Unsure your definition of "not far," so I'll toss out some ideas around Mag Mile / Streeterville, River North and Gold Coast: Obélix, Tzuco, Bavette's, Ciccio Mio, Etta (Bucktown location is better), Centennial (more of an upscale gastropub w/ great craft beer selection), Capital Grille, and Prosecco.

If I were you, would turn attention more to the first four I listed. No doubt, Obélix is one of the more popular fine dining restaurants in the city right now.

ETA: As an aside, I always tell people on this board to explore neighborhoods if you can. There are so many fantastic options in Logan Square, for example. Quickly became one of the two best restaurant neighborhoods in Chicago.

ETAx2: Before anyone says Signature Room, it closed.

Volare is near Navy Pier. It’s very good. Several here have mentioned Capital Grill. If you were thinking a place like that I would go to Eddie V’s instead.

The chef there is no longer there when we went, so not sure how it is now, but great experience

The food is not as impressive as something like Obelix, but The Cherry Circle Room is a good option for proximity and the aesthetics of the space.

We ate at Sienna Tavern (Top Chef Fabio Tribianni)

The food was excellent. Grilled octopus was as tender and wood grilled. Amazing.

Would go back anytime. Great service

Erie cafe, Vermillion, The Dearborn, Prime and Provision. Gene & Georgetti isn't what it once was. Go for a drink but skip dinner.

These are mostly 15 minute walk, places immediatey adjacent to NP are kind of touristy.

Also the Palm sucks. avoid.

There were some posts recommending Capital Grill. I did say if he was looking at something like Capital Grill that I would do Eddie V’s instead.

I guess it’s all about perspective. I would call a 10 minute Uber ride, “not far” when you’re talking about the 3rd biggest city in the country.

And perspective also says you aren't getting up LSD in 10 minutes during rush hour for dinner, but I do agree that Esme is a solid restaurant in a fantastic stretch of LP.
