Anyone ever been? I might be heading there in January and looking for recommendations, tips, etc.

Yeah, it's a good time. Only would recommend spending 3 days max there. Colombia is such a beautiful country it should be a crime to only visit Cartagena.

In a week and a half I went from the beach (Cartagena) to the Andes (Bogota) and then to the Amazon (Leticia). Where else in the world can you do that? Probably only Ecuador.

We scheduled a trip to Cartagena over Thanksgiving. Also just added a day trip to Bogota on a cheap flight. You could also fly to Medellin cheaply but it would need to be an overnight side trip as the times aren't friendly for just a day trip. I'll try and report back with a review and pics.

Ocean: we've got 12 hours in Bogota. What do you recommend?

shite dude, 12 hours in Bogota is not a lot of time.

I didn't spend a ton of time in Bogota, but my friend's family drove us up here as soon as we landed:

Awesome views. If you're staying the night -- the nightlife there is awesome. Just be prepared to see some of the hottest women you've ever seen before -- I'm now dating a latina because of it

eta: museums anywhere in South America are awesome. We have zero appreciation here for any of the amazing history in South America because we were never taught any of it here. This was the coolest museum we went to in Colombia LINK

Check out the fort in Cartagena. That fort was the site of many big battles between the spanish/british/french and even pirates.

Also, you can buy a bunch of amazing street art in Colombia. I collect street art from all the places I've been to in Central/South America.

Final tip: just be safe and don't hop into random taxi cabs. I would use an app called easy taxi -- used that all over Colombia and Ecuador.
