Looking for some recommendations for a cool place to camp and hike near Lake Tahoe or Reno in September for 1-2 days on our way to Yosemite. Any help is appreciated.

Tent camping at a campground. No backcountry.

Many years ago, did some tent camping on the Kalifornia (PRK) side of Lake Tahoe. Right off the main lake road.

That was the most beautiful side, & the rates then were inexpensive.

See if some of those are still controlled by the State Park Service, or u.S. Forest Service.

Many good sites just outside of Yosemite were then controlled by the Forest Service, & also inexpensive.

I've done some good hikes out in South Lake Tahoe area. Emerald Bay Area more specifically. Great views of lake at the top, some small lakes etc. on way up. I would search around that area. It is awesome.

There is also a park nearby there we rented a boat. Probably some camping available. South Lake Tahoe is a great area for all of that. Wish I had some names of trails and stuff but you should be able to search from that hopefully.

We camped in the Virginia Lakes area. Read Dharma Bums before you go. There's a little town Bridgeport close to there for restaurants, supplies, and bars. Also if you pass by the Chevron just outside of Yosemite, you need to check it out. Great food!

I really liked a hike we took from Echo Lake, just south of Lake Tahoe. They have a shuttle boat service that takes you to the far end of Echo Lakes and cuts a few miles off the hike. It's high elevation and not steep at all; it's also a section of the Pacific Crest Trail. It was a great change of pace from the crowds at Lake Tahoe.

ETA: We camped at Fallen Leaf Campground which was pretty nice, nearby, and also close to Emerald Bay. Lake Tahoe is stunning on a sunny day.

For Yosemite - there are a number of forest service campgrounds along the highway on the east side of Tioga pass. They always have room and are decent and close to the park. Getting a campground in Yosemite may be pretty difficult.
