Would you do this?

We live in ATL but are flying from NY to London in June because it is so much cheaper. Our flight to LON doesn't leave until 6pm. Would you fly to NY early morning, scheduled to arrive at 8am, or is that too risky and should just fly in the day before? I really have no desire to stay a night in NY but is flying in the day before worth the peace of mind?

I wouldn't arrive until 3 hours before if you can fly into the same airport as your departure (JFK?). If you have to change airports then I would probably arrive at noon.

It's different airports, we would be flying in to Laguardia and out of JFK. If the flight is on time there will be no issues as it would give us like 6 hours to get from LGA to JFK. It would just really really suck for some freak delay to occur. What are the odds of this happening? Basically would save me about $500 if I could just fly in the morning of.

0800 landing to 1800 takeoff is plenty of time. Spend time in pubs in NYC while waiting. You mention price, but there are direct DL flights from ATL to LHR. How much is your layover at $9 a Guinness going to cost you? More than ten years ago, I spent $150 ubering to Queens from JFK to waste time before a flight to UKI, before the bar bill.

For sure, pack extra undies, toiletries, etc., in your carryon. Toothbrush, comb, contacts, underwear, and a spare shirt or shorts in the carryon. It's not clear if you're changing airlines or not, but when you transfer airlines that don't interline baggage (I don't think Delta and AA/BA interline baggage) your life will suck. Checking, collecting, rechecking luggage... Ugh.

There is no F'ing way I'd do that. I'd transfer in FRA to get to LHR. Maybe try Brussels Airlines? I can't remember where SkyTeam flies, but you could probably also hit AMS or a similar airport. Direct prices early in July are about $1150 (ATL to LHR, June 6 to July 3rd, a random week I picked).

Ha, I mean they can't guarantee it obviously but realistically what are the odds? Other people fly here much more than I do. A 6 hour delay on an early Saturday morning flight to from ATL to NY?

It would suck but is a million to 1. La Guardia is close to JFK so that's not a worry. I remember one time for the flight home I called the Uber and said JFK. We got there and it turns out we were flying out of La Guardia. I er guy made a U turn and we were at La Guardia in 30 minutes

The odds of a cancellation and/or delay vary by flight including time, to/from, and provider. They are publicly available. Weather is also a significant factor.

You are probably fine. Almost certainly fine. I’m not sure anyone can give you any more assurance than that. I wouldn’t fly up a day early if it was me.

I'm trying to understand what you're asking for a little better.

I think you have you already booked your NYC-London flight and you need to book a separate one-way ticket from Atlanta to NYC? Or do you already have ATL-NYC booked as well but just trying to figure out how much time you need to change airports?

What airline is your NYC-London flight?

As far as flight times, I wouldn't book a 6am Saturday morning flight if I was flying on a redeye. That's going to be an extremely long day and you'll be exhausted by the time you get on the plane. Throw in a shitty night of sleep and now you're in London dead tired. I'd probably look for a mid morning flight just to give yourself that buffer. To get from LGA to JFK on a Saturday midday should not take very long (roughly 35 min) but you never know with traffic.

What date are you trying to fly? I can see what I can find. We may be able to find a flight into jfk for you.

From Atlanta to NY is your concern right?
So many nonstops on Delta every day that I think I’d be fine with it.
In general.
But knowing me, I’d go the day before and get a hotel by JFK.

Yes.

Norse.

June 22nd, pretty committed to Southwest though because I can use miles.

This is definitely a concern but one I'm willing to power through to save money. The trip is already going to be well past what I've ever spent on a trip or ever hope to spend again.

Sometimes, it’s worth the extra few hundred to fly direct. Especially when flying internationally. You’re going out of the busiest airport in the world and you didn’t book a direct flight? In doing so you’ve added 24 hours to your travel time.

The complicated itinerary you’ve created is going to be stressful. You’ve added meals and ground transportation in NYC both ways as part of your cost as well. You’re even contemplating a hotel stay ($$$) just to save a few bucks on a flight.

It’s not easy to get from LaGuardia to JFK. They look close, but they’re not. There’s no rail service into LGA, so you’re stuck driving and have to take traffic into account. What’s more, by choosing this route, you’re risking exhaustion when you get to London. The jet lag on the way back is going to hammer you with this itinerary. I suggest taking an extra day off from work when you get back to recuperate.

I always choose convenience, comfort, and ease over saving a few bucks when traveling.

This will be a good experience for you though. Next time, try flying direct and then you can compare the two.

It's not a few bucks. It's $2000 cheaper for my family of 5 to fly from NY to London vs. ATL to London on the day I need to leave, and that's just one way. It's another $2000+ coming back. Yes, if I was an OT baller I wouldn't worry about it but I'm not so I will endure a long day to save that kind of money.

It's not hard and it's an hour tops.

This may be a struggle but we'll overcome.

My wife and I are both teachers so we will have three weeks before having to go back to work.

Friend, I understand the advantages of direct but when it's a long day vs. thousands of dollars that's an easy cost/benefit analysis for me.

Over the last decade I've had 3 flights delayed by 12 hours or more. Out of roughly 100 trips. So put the odds at 3% for a major disruption. Probably less than that. I live near a minor airport where airlines can't really just switch to a different plane so disruptions where I live are more likely to be a big deal.

Last year I found it much cheaper to fly to New Zealand by booking a flight out of LAX. I flew to LAX the same morning on Delta, but very early for a very late flight. And I bought lounge access at LAX which was well worth it. Delta had 3 later flights to LAX that day so I figured the odds of getting bumped completely were very slim. Sounds like you will be going Delta to NYC, if you have several later flights that are possible then I would not worry too much.

We've flown into NYC a few times to connect on separate tickets. We did it once with Norwegian and also with Norse. We usually stay the night in NYC before the connecting flight. The last time we did it, we flew into JFK late at night, and took a city bus to the subway, and then the PATH to NJ where our hotel was. However, for our Norwegian flight, we flew into LGA on Southwest and took a city bus over to JFK for the connection to Norse. If you're taking the first flight of the day out of ATL, there should be less chance for delays. Also, some travel insurance policies provide some coverage for missed connections. You could look into that, but be sure to read the fine print.

These threads are fun.

OP asks question about specific logistics to save money.

Answers: Fly direct in first class.

Oh great, F your schedule, claim baggage, re-check baggage, etc? You realize how much money you're going to blow on a lunch on London in a single day, unless you're eating out of a convenience store? You're creating your own likely suck fest, essentially to "save" what you're going to spend in two afternoons on food and bev.

Imagine a bag gets lost. SWA's fault? Norse's fault? Who knows, but your kid won't have a toothbrush for days. When you try to make the EU claim for baggage loss, you make it with Norse, since they flew you to the EU, but what about of the Delta flight was delayed? And on, and on.

7 days flying through DC are $1200 in coach on United from ATL. Multiple itineraries are available, including for under $1k, if you can leave on alternate days (Thursday vs Saturday can be a $300 difference).

Save your SWA points for a trip to Vegas or New Orleans.

You should be fine.

Nothing with flying is ever 100%, but early morning flights are typically reliable because there hasn’t been much time in the day for them to get delayed on a different route.

I also disagree with the folks saying you’ll feel so bad. It’ll be a long day, but it’ll actually set you up pretty well for the UK time zone.

Assuming 4am (9am UK) wake up, you’ll be ready for sleep by the 6pm flight (11pm UK).
