I have worked overseas some and worked with several Scots and Brits and they love Spain/Portugal as their home instead of the UK.

I have also worked with some Americans that moved to Central America and they loved it.

I am still far from retirement age, but would love to start looking for a good place to spend most of my time in retirement.

Spain or Portugal if you are like me and don't like long, cold, dark winters. 8 love a lot of other countries but they tend to have those long shitty winters.

Do you have family in the states you are leaving behind? I find that similar time zones makes a big difference.

If you still have a long way to go, start traveling to each place instead of asking strangers. Take two weeks each year to explore a country.

Start with Ecuador. I mean, why not?

But there is a significant difference between the weather of Leeds and the cost of Barca. Southern Ireland, for the language advantage at least? The smell of peat in a pub, combined with Irish people (who always want to be social) may outweigh the winter.

Zappa, you have an opinion on the Baltics or Med Eastern European countries at all at all? In Poland, I learned that the locals don't give two shits about me trying to speak their language, to an extent the old ladies shot me, "are you fing kidding me trying to say thank you in Polish" every damn day. It seems like Croatia would be no brainer, but I haven't visited. Coastline, probably fluent in English (mostly.)

This relates primarily to Slovenia since I spent the most time there and find it to be an amazing country.

My experiences, particularly with younger (let's say under 40's even), most spoke English in the large to mid sized towns. They were very welcoming. Enjoyed talking to Americans. Besides the cost of living (I'd say Albania is the singularly cheapest of the Balkan Countries from what I've read, but full disclosure, haven't been there yet), you have amazing scenic beauty. Low crime rates. Universal healthcare, a well-regarded education system, and a good work-life balance.

I was only in Serbia for a few days and can't fully speak to that. But from what I experienced, all of the above. Plus, they seem to really embrace life (maybe more fun loving than Slovenians?).

I'd go back to either countries in a heartbeat. Would try living in Slovenia for sure.

Like Nole said, Slovenia is nice and everyone speaks english, but it gets cold in the winter. I also really like Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.... but too damn cold. Croatia is a good option. My great grandfather was from Croatia and I looked into the possibility of getting citizenship, like Ireland does, but no dice.

I would closely inspect healthcare. I think people really underestimate how much they will depend on doctors when they are older. It's all palm trees and cheap, easy living until you have a heart attack and then you might be in real trouble.

Read the recent news from there. Lots of terrorism and crime.

Until recently considered one of the safest countries in the region, Ecuador, which is also the gateway to the Galapagos Islands and home to the rainforest, attracted many tourists.

But now it has the highest recorded murder rate in Latin America.

In 2023, police recorded about 8,000 violent deaths. That is eight times more than in 2018 and puts Ecuador ahead of countries like Mexico and Colombia.

Yeah, a friend of mine has lived in Costa Rica for the last 20 years. He's coming back to the states for this reason. That and things are getting more expensive there and drug violence is on the rise too. He loved Costa Rica for the first decade, and is pretty disenchanted now.

If I had to move overseas I might look at Thailand first. Spent a month there in February. The Thai people are the nicest on earth and the food is incredible. Very scenic. The obvious downside is that even the winter is hot as balls.

Ecuador would be high on my list, in spite of the drug violence. It's mostly gang on gang, but is expanding as the government is moving to shut them down. Still, I think that most of the country is pretty safe still and it's my favorite Latin American country that has fairly cheap living.

It’s not that bad. Just stay out of Guayaquil. I’m in Ecuador now.
