Going to Austin 4th of July wknd. Are The Driskall or W Austin good places to be for dining, drinking, shopping, live music, Etc... What are some suggestions for places to eat and things to do?

Those are two of the better hotels in town. The San Jose should be considered too and maybe The Austin Motel (kinda weird).
Wish I could help with food but I just to whatever Mexican dive my FiL says. The Texas Chili Parlor is a good time.

Just attended a conference at the new Hotel van Zandt. Nice hotel, well located by Rainey Street, and named after one of my favorite musicians. Its a winner all around.

W was nice. Parking is expensive. Quality is there. A bit more of a walk to prime restaurants

Last time we were in Austin we stayed at the Driskill. It's a great location and an very unique hotel. It's not the most luxurious out there, as it's quite old, but we definitely enjoyed the charm.
As far as food, our best meal was at the Steiner Ranch Steakhouse. Great food, amazing views, and also typically has a live band. It's a little outside of Austin but worth the drive.
