Making the trip next year. At 16 hours I read it ranks 3rd in longest flights available. Any advice, recommendations, tips? My longest flight experience was DFW to LHR and it seemed long.

TIA

If that's the Delta flight, the two times I've made that trip it stopped in Dakar, Senegal to refuel.

I mention it because both times the Senegalese police came aboard with drug sniffing dogs and pretty much turned the plane inside out looking for illegal drugs. They made each passeger stand in the aisle next to their seat while the police searched the cabin.

A flight attendant told me it's how the corrupt officials hold "rich" Americans for ransome to supplement their meager pay. She said she had seen the cops take passengers off the plane but luckily that didn't happen on either of my flights.

The last time I took that flight was about 8 years ago so maybe the situation has changed since then.

Not really. The Dakar airport is probably the worst in the world. Like a lot of former French colonies the people there practice cadeau. Which is French for what of yours can I have for free?

The facilities coupled with the poverty of the people there make it very unpleasant airport.

Which is a shame because of the nostalgia and geographic importance of Dakar. It's always been a traditional refueling stop and even the Concorde used to fly there.

That flight is non-stop these days and just a tad over 15 hours

This, if you can swing it. Unfortunately, the cost is ridiculous. I'd personally do an economy comfort seat on the bulkhead. If you can sleep sitting up, it's not so bad. If not, it's torturous.

4,500.00 upgrade fee for business class. That's on top of the 1K for the ticket. So business class is not an option.

Economy comfort it is.

I took that flight before, and we did not stop to refuel. I am so used to flying, it doesn't bother me anymore. The 777 has plenty of power options so you should be ok. I just load some movies onto my iPad, maybe a few e-books.

You can always drink a lot or take some OTC sleep aids.

We flew ATL-JNB in November 2015 (missed the Ole Miss and A&M games) on DL 200. We flew back to MSY from Brazil in December.

The DL 200 flight was in business elite and we took seats 7A and 7B. The flight took almost 14 hours and 30 minutes to complete. The Biz Class meal was VERY underwhelming. After the meal was served and eaten, think it was around 10pm EST, I took an Ambien 10mg and a quarter tablet of Soma 350mg and ended up sleeping for almost 9 hours, which left about 3 hours to the flight.

Start taking an aspirin 8 hours before departure and then 4 hours before departure, 1 on departure and 1 every 4 hours for DVT prophylaxis.

Let me know if I can provide any additional information to questions you have.
