family friendly hotels or lodging? easy hiking trails for kids? Must eats?

Biltmore and some easy hikes are on the list of things to do so far

are there any good towns worth staying b/t south LA and asheville to break the drive up? it looks like you pass through Atlanta...

Asheville is awesome around that time of year. You'll definitely get that crisp cool fall air. Biltmore will be transitioning quickly to Christmas the day after Thanksgiving. The Blue Ridge Parkway exit is right off the Biltmore area. There are tons of lookouts and short hikes off of the parkway.

The Grove Park Inn is a must see. It was built during the Arts and Crafts era and has two fire places in the lobby that are 10 high inside. They literally burn tree trunks in the winter. Visitors are welcome and encouraged. The large open lobby has a restaurant, bar, shopping, etc. You can spend hours just chilling there with views of the mountains. It looks like something you'd see out west.

It's hard to go wrong with restaurants. So much good food and beer in Asheville. I'd just try yelp or a quick google search. The local breweries are Highland, Greenman, Wicked Weed, Wedge, and Sierra Nevada and New Belguim have also built facilities there.

As for stops, you have to visit downtown Greenville, SC. Its only 45 minutes from Asheville and on the way. The downtown is picture perfect with great restaurants, shopping and a beautiful park with a large waterfall right in the middle of downtown.

What are you looking for? Are you going to need multiple rooms and have a bunch of kids? Your typical chains are near the Biltmore, Asheville Mall or the interstates. The Biltmore is usually crazy high, the Grove Park is pretty affordable, and then you have the boutique hotels downtown. You should check out the Asheville Crown Plaza a little bit out of town. There is a legit Zip Line course on site and they have a free shuttle downtown and back every 15 minutes until around midnight. Thats the best deal in town.

I've also used Airbnb and VRBO in Asheville and surrounding mountain areas.

I would strongly suggest booking a day trip for fly fishing. I can hook you up with a cool knowledgeable guy if you would like. We went during this time last year and have been wanting to go back ever since the day we left. Take the ghost tour in Asheville but get tickets in advance. It's a night tour. You are going to fall in love;the Biltmore was awesome and the Land Rover experience on the Biltmore grounds was legit

Also don't go through Atl. Go north through Gadsden Al and go right before you get to Knoxville. Very scenic, ride the blue ridge pkwy

Not to piggyback/hijack the thread but definitely interested in the fly fishing and other Asheville activities. My grandparents retired and now live 30 miles NE of Asheville so we are heading their way this weekend . The wife and I (29, no kids) are gonna land in Asheville around 11a on Friday. Plan on doing lunch and a couple brews at Sierra Nevada then wandering around downtown before heading to see the grandparents.

Are there any great spots down town that are a great stop?

Is the biltmore worth spending an entire afternoon when we're only there for 3 days?

And lastly , looking are doing a white water rafting trip Sunday afternoon, but would be open to switching to a fly fishing or hiking trip as well.

Any suggestions would be great, haven't been there since 2009 and Im sure plenty has changed in that time

The food in NC is great. They have some of the best Barbecue anywhere. Try to find some mom/pop restaurant that serves great Breakfast. Ask around. I find one called Rick's Country Store and they had Biscuits about the size of a Softball and covered them with gravy. I wish I was going that time of year you will have a great time.

Anybody going to that area in Shelby there is Bridges Barbecue and is the best place to eat anywhere!!

I'm not sure if it's exactly on the way for you, but we are going to the smokies this fall and I'm going to stop and stay two nights in Chattanooga. I want the kids to see look out Mnt, Ruby Falls, and the aquarium there.

This is the cabin that we booked. it was a few minutes outside of Maggie Valley. We never saw that creek in the pics but there was a nice size river running at the bottom of the driveway. It was so peaceful and very clean and cozy inside. We went the first weekend of November and they had just released a bunch of farm trout in some of the rivers. We fished one day around Bryson city and one day in the Cherokee trophy waters. It was spiritual standing in those creeks snagging 2 ft long rainbow trout and beautiful brook trout. The guy above can be found on Instagram and he made the trip awesome. Very knowledgable and enthusiastic about fly fishing and very attentive to tying on new flies and helping my wife with her fish. He even gave a short tutorial before heading into the water.

The Biltmore is sick, but the tour inside is kinda stuffy and a bit boring. Very awesome place, and I'm a rover enthusiast so I would advise the Land Rover experience. The wine tour was awesome and the wine was very tastey. Gorgeous estate. I can't remember the names of the restaurants but I would suggest just going on a walk through the square. It's a fairly small town With tons of cool places.

I love waterfall hikes and heard there were a bunch of them, but we didn't get to do that. I did hike about 3 miles on the AT just to say I got on it. Overall it was my favorite location to visit, and I have been all over the US.
