Garmisch-Partenkitchen is a ski-town in the Bavarian Alps right on the border with Austria and would be the closest town fitting the bill of what you describe.

Innsbruck is a beautiful small city as well. For ski-towns in Austria maybe Kitzbuhel could be a good candidate.

Other places that could be of interest in Bavaria and just across the border in Austria:

- Rothenburg
- Bamberg
- Salzburg + Bertchesgaden

Somewhat of a downer, but a visit to Dachau is worthwhile.

Absolutely…We made it less of a downer right afterward with a trip to the oldest brewery in the world (Weihenstephan in Freising)

If going in December, Nürnberg might be the best Christmas market town in Bavaria but is a bit long for a day trip.

Likewise, Salzburg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber would both be at least overnights for me.

Good points, wanted to add something of that vain.

I think just Bamberg, Nuremberg or Rothenberg would be doable if you pick one (but skip Nuremberg if Xmas market isn’t running IMHO). Edit: just kidding, scratch that it’s further away than I remembered, this is indeed probably an overnighter.

Salzburg + Bertchesgaden is definitely an overnighter at least though.

Garmisch by itself is feasible as a day trip.

Breweries are a good shout too, Weinstephaner or Ayinger would be good bets.

If OP isn’t limiting themselves to day-trips/one-nighters and is serious about hitting the slopes then throw Iscghl and Sankt Anton on the list for sure.

Lindau is about a two hour train ride. Unbelievable little town on lake Constance.

Not as much of a tourist town but I really enjoyed Kelheim. Easy trip from Munich. Home of Weissbier and couple of beer halls that serve this as a specialty. Can hike or bike along Danube River gorge (or take a boat). Visit German Liberation Hall overlooking Danube gorge. Take boat to Weltenburg Abbey for Kloster Bier. Supposedly Europes oldest brewer. Beer and Abbey Chapel were incredible. Easy to do all in a day.

Innsbruck is a short train ride. Lots of ski options and a cool town. The hotels in old town have busses that will take you to the mountains.

I don't know about skiing, but my favorite day trip from there would be Salzburg. If you have extra day, my favorite city in that area is Vienna, but you can't do that justice with a day trip from Munich.

My next suggestion would be to take a drive up the Romantic Road to the walled medieval town of Rothenburg.

Dacchau, right outside of Munich, is a moving experience.

Others have mentioned the eagles nest but also don't overlook lake Königssee and the boat ride(s) to the various portions of the lake.

Innsbruck is close enough for an easy drive and is a great day trip.

If you are willing to rent a car I would definitely do Mittenwald and rope in Garmisch/Grainau and the Eibsee. Zugspitze would be cook to but then you are looking at a lot for a day trip.

If I were you I would focus on the Zugspitze for the morning and lunch (eating at the mountain pick after the final lift up gives a really cool view of the Alps). For the afternoon, you could walk around the Eibsee or choose to do either mittenwald or more nature stuff like the partnach gorge.

If looking for a return thing on your drive back to munich (if you didn't spend the whole day around garmisch/grainau) then check out Andechs and the brewery/monastery and lake.

Oberammergau, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Neuschwanstein Castle are worth seeing. Innsbruk is nearby and a nice train ride.

Hard to do all of the above in a day with munich as a home base. OP, I would recommend choosing Neuschwantein (do this first/early AM) and Oberammergau as a very full day OR doing a day trip to Garmisch/Grainau/Mittenwald. Doing garmisch + fussen in one day would be very tiring and you run the risk if crowds at neuschwanstein ruining your day.

Even then, visiting the garmisch area would just be a tease and would get you thinking about a trip just to that area (and the portions of austria to the south of Zugspitze).
