So, found a round trip ticket for $325 to Anchorage and am departing tomorrow. Life long dream to see the Northern Lights. I’m sure some of you assholes have been there. Any tips?

How long are you there? Seems a good question to have posed to the travel board before now

You will not see northern lights in Anchorage. I did this same song and dance two years ago. You have to go further north to be guaranteed. You might see some “greying”.

Also. That flight from Seattle to Anchorage makes you think you’re going to die if it’s your last leg. Takes forever.

Yankees are far south of that.

I went in July so I don’t know what the options are in February. Charter a fishing trip out of Seward. Go to Denali. Boat trip to see whales and glaciers calving. Find reindeer sausage. Anchorage is basically Reno, Nevada so find things to do away from Anchorage.

I went in June in 2007. Fished on drift boats down the Kenai River and then fished deep sea near Montague Island and caught 200 lbs of halibut (2 fish) plus some other species cod, silvers, shark

Loved it and will return again with my sons and son in laws soon.

Also moose are buttholes. Alaska is like one big wilderness trailer park set in 1983. That’s the best way to describe it.

I have considered getting a rental car and driving to Fairbanks. It’s just one hell of a fricking deal $325 round trip. Can’t refuse it.

Probably not for me. Going to pack an edible to pass the frick out, but I’ve taken a flight from America to Beijing like 7 times. Probably won’t affect me too much.

Yeah this is your best shot...but you can take a trip about a couple hours north and make a quick trip out of it to Talkeetna. That would be easier for you.

Dude. I’m being sincere. This may not be a good idea. You will go 40-50 mile stretches easy with no gas stations. Nothing but wilderness. We drove around in the Fall and at times I felt it was dicy. This is winter.

Go to the wildlife preserve near Anchorage if open and looking to burn time outside the city for cheap.

Living in Colorado, I’m used to the worst case scenario with moose. Due to Covid I camped a frick ton this year, and this year 3 bull moose showed up in my camp site one time. After that there’s no way I’ll ever go camping again not armed to the teeth. It was absolutely terrifying and amazing no one was killed during it.

Yeah rental to Fairbanks would be rough in the winter...unless you are ultra accustomed to it.

Folks up in Palmer way had some really good Aurora shots in Hatcher's pass over this past weekend I think.

I completely believe you. I’m going to be there for 5 days, and I’ll drive to Fairbanks if that’s what it takes. It’s in the Top 5 in my Bucket List and I could frick myself over this. Hard to pass up a $300 round trip ticket and I have enough Hilton points not to spend a dime from there. I will spend cash on a rental car though.

Just checked the forecast on talkeetna...you wont have a shot. Lots of snow in the forecast

ETA: Fairbanks ain't looking too much better with the forecast.

You might be out of luck.
