Are there certain districts/neighborhoods/areas I should avoid lingering and booking lodging in, for safety reasons?
If you get what I mean.

I felt safe everywhere.... I'm sure there are areas to avoid and maybe I did. I stayed near the city center like 4-5 blocks from it. So the "red light" district wasn't too far from me either.

Fair enough. And I'm not trying to be paranoid, but shite is happening once a week in Europe and the Netherlands seems due on account of France, Germany & Belgium all getting theirs recently.

I agree. We stayed in the leidseplein square area while backpacking over there and really enjoyed it.

I just was there last week and I have been there 6 times in the last 10 years. It is way safer than any large american city. If you get out of the city center 5 miles or so, you can run into housing projects that you wouldn't want to spend a lot of time in. But we did ride the bicycles out to one project for a guided street art tour and it was fine. We stayed on Overtoom which about a 10 minute walk from Leidsplein. Overtoom is full of cafes and restaurants that many tourists don't get out to. Kinkerstraat runs parallel to overtoom and the whole area around there is great. Another good area to check out is de Pijp (the pipe) neighborhood. We also discovered a cool little area when we went to Tap Zuid for food and beer. There were 4 or 5 cafes next to each other, no tourists and regular locals hanging out.

this is not the "cutting right to the chase" typically associated with inquiries into your destination

If you're young and doing the hostel route (which I HIGHLY recommend) check out the Flying Pig hostel in uptown or downtown. I stayed in the uptown one. Right next to a ton a pubs/bars/clubs/restaurants. The flying pig is one of the best known hostels. So if they have availability while you are there, definitely check it out!It says "youth hostel" but I believe "youth" is used a little loosely. There were tons of people in their mid thirties there.

Tip: go to Boom Chicago comedy club

No need to fly to Amsterdam for that now. A quick trip to Denver or Seattle can net better results.

Damn, guess I'm off in la la land. I was thinking he was referencing hookers.
