I've decided to add Amsterdam to the start of my Scandinavia trip this summer (realizing that Amsterdam =/= Scandinavia).

Thoughts on hostels and activities? I won't have a ton of time before I meet up with a friend in Copenhagen but I found a very affordable reward travel ticket that I want to use.

I have never been to Amsterdam and my trip is in a ~month.

Van Gogh museum is a must in my opinion. Rent a bicycle and cover more ground while exploring, plus bikes have more rights then both pedestrians & automobiles. Heineken museum was fun but you only get a few samples. Anne frank house was really moving. Crowded but worth it imo. I was younger when I went and visited a few coffee shops when I was there. Be careful some really big weirdos hangout in them. Creepy AF at night at a few of them. Red light district was depressing as hell. Eastern European girls standing in Windows with red lights lit up wearing skimpy outfits. I was with my gf at the time but even if I was single I would have stayed away. One Russian run coffee shop had a gift shop next to it that sold drug paraphernalia of all kinds. The clerk asked if I wanted to get an engraved spoon or mirror for my coke or heroine. Wtf! I guess when some drugs are easily available, all drugs become easily available. Also those Dutch love the some French fries and mayo, shite is sold everywhere.
If the tulips are in bloom while you are there it's amazing to check out a farm. They grow a shite ton of flowers there. Damn, all this reminiscing makes me wanna go back!

Stay near central station or Leidseplein (sp?) because they are both central. I absolutely love the city. Enjoy walking around sitting and eating and just relaxing. Super cool city. Enjoyed the Anne Frank house.

With only 1 1/2 days I would agree. You'll probably just have time to check out that central/ old town area. We usually stay out near Vondel Park/ Overtoom area in airbnb apts. Its cheaper and its easy to get anywhere in amsterdam on the bikes we rent. Although we almost never go to the Dam or Leidseplein area. We hang out in the Overtoom or Pijp neighborhood or across the IJ river in Amsterdam Noord (north). There are free ferries behind central station that take you over there.

If you decide to go to the Anne Frank house, get your ticket in advance online. The line to get in was horrendous when I went last year, and it wasn't even the busy season. Bypassing that saves a lot of time.

This, or go late in the day when the lines may be shorter

I think the Van Gogh museum is a must. A boat ride through the canals is touristy but a fun way to see the city. Fun place
