Thinking of driving up and spending a couple of weeks. Any suggestions on what to be sure to check out? Will base out of Fairbanks.

Bring an airhorn if you are driving the alaskan highway. Herds laugh at your car horn when they decide to sleep in the middle of the road.

I like Fairbanks. You can drive up to the artic circle. Just make sure your vehicle can handle unimproved roads.
I remember there being some good dive bars in Fairbanks and the area near UAF had some cool places to hangout.
If you're there in June catch the midnight baseball game.

Denali national park
I know Roger recommends Chena Hot Springs Resort. I didn't get a chance to get that far north.
Take a bush plane somewhere

I've been quite a few times, and applied to probably 100 jobs up there right after graduation in an attempt to move there but had no luck.
Denali, Fairbanks and Anchorage are 3 popular cities to check out. Wasilla is also pretty cool as that is where they start the Iditarod from. My most memorable experience was flying in a helicopter from Denali to land on a glacier about an hour away, the only way I can even begin to describe it was like landing on the moon. It was truly amazing man I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Go visit the Alaskan pipeline and check out the trains also.

Yeah, last time I was there we shot pool in a dive bar right near the UAF campus, it was a cool place.

Nice towns but it is a 25 hour trip, and most of it is in Canada.

We've vacationed in Alaska 7 times, including once in February for the Iditarod.
Order the latest "The Milepost." It is fantastic for anyone driving around Alaska. It gives an up to date description of what is on every highway in Alaska to the tenth of a mile. It points out where wildlife is common to see from the highway, places to stop for gas (important) and eat. It will warn you of bad roads and roads under construction for the summer. It's well worth its cost.

It's still a pretty good road guide. When we moved here in '94, I planned my whole trip through Canada with it.
