Tips on finding the cheapest airfare? Any other advice you can think of?
I was thinking about just using Google Flights and choosing the cheapest flight within the time period I'm interested in visiting (August 2016).

Just did a flight to Tokyo. I used Google flights. We flew ANA, try them awesome Japanese airline. We had to connect in Chicago going over and LAX on the return and the domestic flights were United. We booked everything though United as they partner with ANA. It was cheaper to book thorough United than through ANA.

Clear your cookies when searching. Compare the price from Google flights to the carrier's website as said above.

ANA - great. Last fall I had a direct from Tokyo to Houston. Business class and coach both great.

That's how I got mine. Also, if flying to Tokyo, give HND a shot. Much closer to central city in comparison to NRT.
Enjoy Japan

Try skyscanner for booking your flights in addition to Google Flights.
Narita is a long way outside downtown Tokyo, make sure you know how you're getting downtown from the Airport in advance. Cabs are good except about 99% of cabbies in Tokyo don't speak Engrish. My nephew does and he's my minder when I go to Japan. Get ready for a real language & culture shock.
The country is beautiful, scenic, clean, expensive and orderly. In addition to Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Kagoshima, Osaka, etc are wonderful. Shinkansen FTW! Enjoy.

Good call. Great website, useful for almost all of my searches.
Another flight searching tip: the Skytrax website is, generally, a useful tool for screening airlines, airports, etc. There are a lot of categories and rankings, so screen wisely, specifically. For really long flights, check flight reports. Overkill otherwise.
