I understand inflation. But damn!

For 2014, I booked a June 2014 flight in Sep. 2013.

Trying to book a Dec 21-22 departure now. Price is damn near a THOUSAND dollars higher than just three years ago.

What gives?

I can get a 2 stop flight: MSY-ORD-HND(TOKYO)-SYD for about 2100+. But man, that's gonna be about 35-40 hours total travel time from House to House.

Time of year changes, but also you are way far out. No reason to book right now imo, set a flight tracker and I bet you it drops under $2000. Flights don't go back up until about 3 weeks out, so there's really no reason to book anything outside of 4-6 weeks out unless you get a good deal or it's a small plane and need seats together.

Agreed, I think you're booking a little early here. Also I wouldn't be surprised if it's more expensive to fly right before Christmas.

In addition to what others have said, you are also looking to go at a peak travel time for Australia at the beginning of Summer.

September is a shoulder season there, Christmas is the high season. Start looking again in July and you might have better luck, but I wouldn't count on a significant drop.

Amadeus...2 Stops MSY-LAX-NRT-SYD ...12/21 thru 12/31...$2121 United/ANA...that's pretty good for XMAS, the QANTAS A380 out of DFW is $3800

ps...This maybe more trouble than it's worth, If you can find a Travel Agent, there are oddball codings that airlines use sometimes, for example Air New Zealand has a flight that routes LAX-RAROTONGA-AUCKLAND-SYD,sometimes this flight is dirt cheap.

Yeah, you might be going to the same destination, but that's not the same flight. As others said, hold on for a while and keep looking.

I also should mention that I'm going to stay for New Year's Eve and watch the fireworks over the Harbor Bridge in Sydney.

I guess the holiday is adding a few hundred bucks.

Just a quick update, found a flight on Cheapo Air which puts me in the air on Christmas Day, arriving early 12/26 and leaving Jan. 10. for about $1250 MSY-DFW-SYD then SYD-Brisbane-LAX-MSY Not bad.

Going to eat Emu and Kangaroo tail for the holidays.
