Roatan.. You can "order" lobster for $1-2 a piece (not a pound) to cook in your villa from fishermen just boating by. Kids get exhausted fast, and you can pay pennies for people to come cook for you at said villa. You can also stay on the south end of the island and be more touristy.

The north side is more jungle-ish, so you have to stash things like formula in the fridge or in vacuum sealed bags, or you will get destroyed by ants PDQ. Don't bring "organic" bug repellent, bring Deet and Permethrin with you.

Relaxing AF. Plenty of properties that can stick four or five groups of adults and crumb snatchers in different villas that connect to the same central living room/kitchen.

ETA: My bad, you said international, I just assumed your limits were not much farther than Mexico, like the rest of TD (Not pointing at you 777 and Zappas obviously) and the 30A crowd. You can 100% do Paris, Marseille, Barcelona, etc with young kids if you plan it right. Don't do dumb shite like land a six hour time zone shift away in the morning, etc. Every little girl you're related to will SCREAM "Paris!!" if it gets mentioned. They will eat their weight in croissants, and it'll be worth every Euro.

I took my wife and three kids (then 5, 2, and 7 minths) to Bavaria and the Austrian Tyrol last May and had a fantastic time. In Grainau, Munich, Salzburg, and the Saltzkammergut (lakes district west of salzburg) there is a ton of stuff for kids to enjoy amd "whole family fun". Salzburg really is a perfect city for kids due to its size and hilltop fortress.

The people, restaurants, and attractions were all very pro-family. It is standard in every munich or salzburg beer garden is for a playground to be present. Let me know if you are interested in any further info. We are going back to vienna and the wachau valley this July before heading to Costa Navarino (west side of greece mainland) and I have read great things.

It's an interesting conversation for sure but there are ways to do Disney cheaper as well so it kind of makes things hard to compare. Asia always comes to mind because your dollar goes so far in places like Viet Nam and The Philippines. Singapore is another place that is expensive for Asia but not as expensive as Disney. Not sure I would suggest it for just a week though. Costa Rica is closer and there are plenty if places in the Caribbean that could be done for the cost of a rack rate Disney trip/package but you would definitely be sacrificing some convienences (which may not be a bad thing).

We did Ireland last year with our kids. My wife and I have traveled internationally many times, but this was the first with kids.

It was the best vacation we've ever done as a family. Ireland had been on my radar for a while, and it worked out great for the kids. Relatively short flights, and no language barrier. Our kids had a great time and the people were very welcoming and friendly. Other than the flights being a little high, once we got there everything else was cheap/comparable to prices at home.

I wouldn’t think of going to Asia with small kids and especially so if it was a shorter trip. Sounds like a nightmare.

I’d be looking at the shortest flights paths possible with a direct flight if at all possible.

insane price of Disney and even the Florida panhandle

Congrats for thinking outside of the box.

Not starting a side thread but people that routinely spend nearly 10K at Disney blows my mind. I get maybe doing it once, but I know families that go every 2-3 years with their kids. IMO for that kind of money you owe it to your kids to expand their horizons.

I agree with the short trip which is the same thing I said but there are great english speaking places in Asia that offer a great cost conversions for Americans

I truly do not understand the hardcore devotion to disney, and I definitely am missing what makes orlando so great. At least with the "lands" you have other options and aren't forced to devote your entire trip to disney stuff.

I saw one stop flights from BTR to Paris in the $650s in December a few months ago. Rough same prices for Rome and Munich. Screw epcot and bring your kids to the real thing.

If you can avoid high seasons in europe and are willing to airbnb or vrbo you can easily save money on a euro trip woth the family. Besides the calendar (affects airfare/crowds/lodging), your biggest cost driver would be hotels. If it is not a party of 2, hotels are often not your best option.

Any recommendations and destinations?

Have you considered Quebec City and montreal? French speaking, pretty good food, QC is a walled city (looks like a castle to kids), some outdoors stuff to do, and very reasonable flights? I would recommend staying in QC, but montreal will support flights in/out a bit better.

YOLO - do both

Living within less than a half day's drive to the worlds most popular vacation resort and theme park definitely has it's advantages but do agree that there are many places in this country and around the world that kids should not miss just for the sake of routine trips to Disney World, 30A, Gatlinburg, etc.

Kids may not really appreciate big cities unless there's a lot of kid activities to participate in.

They would remember seeing a few historic sites but if all you're planning on is sightseeing, restaurants, and shopping, they will get bored quick.

I would find somewhere to keep them interested. Some place with a resort like place they would have fun staying at. Or a place with experiences like sailing, horseback riding, hiking, etc. Experiences are far more rewarding that sightseeing for kids, in my opinion. I've never been overseas, so I don't have a specific place to recommend.

In the same boat with a 5 and 3 yo. Our plan is mayde do Alaska cruise (possibly Disney) soon, and do Yosemite the next year. First true international will be Iceland. Easy to get to, and a lot to see (horseback riding, northern lights, etc). Eventually (once oldest around 10-12) will do African safari, Galapagos, etc. Once the youngest gets to around 11-12, will start mixing in bigger european cities.

roatan is a great spot for a family vacation. I went last summer and we all loved it. shout out for brisas del mar in roatan. great little boutique hotel with a pool, bar, music, great workers, and good food and drinks. enjoyed the vibe their over some huge resort. you can take a water taxi to the resorts any time for like $5. also check out curacao, one of my favorite spots that i have been to. both are safe and you can rent a car and travel around the island and enjoy alot of different beaches and scenery. both have some great snorkeling spots also. curacao is more modern because of the dutch influence. I also think snorkeling in curacao was better.

we are hitting puerto rico starting this weekend. I have never been but its def more expensive than curacao or roatan but my daughters passport hasnt come in yet and I have a busy july scheduled.

screw disney I have been to both disneyland and disneyworld 1 time each and it wouldnt hurt my feelings to never go back again. not a fan of waiting in line most of the day. would much rather experience the world thru my own eyes and enjoying what the world has to offer both culturally and its beauty.

Planning to take our two kids (6 & 3) to Amsterdam & Bruges during Easter week 2024.

Keukenhof tulip festival is in full swing, and Efteling amusement park is about a 2-hour train ride to the south.

We’ve been to AMS before so we have an idea about what to expect…we’ll mix in a boat tour and some windmills along the way.

No plans to visit Disney anytime soon.

First place I thought of was Copenhagen. Like all of Scandinavia, it's very family and kid oriented. And Tivoli Gardens is there and is the amusement park that inspired Walt Disney. It's a really nice historic amusement park that is a fraction of the cost of Disney. Copenhagen is also the home of Hans Christian Anderson and there are some museums about him and his children's stories and his grave is there in an old cemetery. There are also some old medieval towers you can go up in which kids love and there are all sorts of boating opportunities since Copenhagen is on the water. There are also castles you can tour not far from the city and the Louisiana Art Museum, nothing to do with the state though. It's a museum with a lot of outdoor areas and a really cool cafe on the cliff overlooking the ocean..It's a quick train ride, over the big bridge, to Malmo Sweden which is a cool city with a huge pedestrian only area. The only problem is Copenhagen is very, very expensive.

I just wanted to chime in to say that we've got the exact same thought process as OP. Hell, we spend almost 5k in Orange Beach Goddamn Alabama. When the youngest ( 8mos) is a few years older, we will for sure be looking international.

FYI, Europe with a family aint as cheap as people say. As a Florida resident I can do 4 days with 3 kids at Disney for under $3000 by staying at a house off site and being reasonable on food.

You'll be lucky to find airfare for $600 each which is $2400 for a family of 4 to europe. Throw in passports and other travel costs and you are going to be lucky to get to Europe for under $3000 just in round trip travel.

I spent 16 nights in Paris last November with my family of 5 plus I paid for the lodging and airfare for my MIL and our total was about $18,000. Luckily I had 1.2 mil CC points. I tried like hell to get good airfare but ended up averaging about $900 each. My wife wanted great lodging so we splurged and that was about $400/ night but it was a 3 bedroom apt in the Latin quarter so really not bad IMO. But a good chunk of that was also going to Disney Paris for 3 nights and 2 days. I could have gone to France for under $10k easily for that time period for a family of 6.

Its the second time my oldest has been to Europe and she is 9.

Europe is generally VERY family friendly. My recommendation for little kids is to avoid the BIG cities...as a guy that's been to London and Paris. But seriously, the small to mid size cities where you don't have to use a massive subway system and can drive around is fantastic. Generally things are closer together/ more walkable and things there are generally more family friendly than the states.

I would highly recommend Ireland due to the short flight or Belgium, Holland, etc area of Northern Europe.
