You're still that salty that I was right about the PS4 killing the Xbone? Sheesh, let it go already!

I told you so, though.

UltimateHog,
Is this difference being the Xbox One vs. Xbox One S? Appears to be only a marginal upgrade in terms of hardware but wondering if that's the reason xbox one users are having some issues?

The S has a marginal performance increase over the original, so maybe.

I would get the S, even if you're not going 4K soon.

The 500GB S is $299, little more performance and a 4K player with 4K upscaling and HDR. It's a good deal and pretty future proof in your situation.

Have you ever used it to connect/be a pass-thru for other devices such as amazon firetv or ever used it with the Hauppage TV tuner?

It's crazy that there's no real "central hub" for media consumption including OTA tv. Not even regular receivers do this and that blows my mind in 2016. I'm literally considering buying an Xbox One S and playing Madden maybe 1x a week.

Unfortunately no, I bought mine strictly for the 4K bluray player for my new 4K TV.

I don't really plan on playing games on it either, it did come with Halo 5 so maybe that 1x a week like you with Madden.

Hard to say if the S is worth it for you, guess it depends on the price difference, and how long you plan on keeping it and if/when you plan on going to 4K.

If you don't plan on going 4K within a year or two, I would say to just buy a used original Xbone I think they are pretty damn cheap these days and you can always sell it worst case.

Two final questions I have are:
1) Can the Xbox One S be plugged in via HDMI to my receiver and then have my receiver go to my TV (for surround sound)? The kicker is that my current receiver is NOT a 4k receiver. Will it still play video/sound even though I don't have a 4k receiver to pass through? Also my TV is NOT a 4k tv.

2) It appears I can use the Hauppage TV tuner + a Amazon FireTV and use the Xbox and the media center. But can I access BOTH directly through an app on the Xbox one? I see people use the "TV" app for the TV tuner but what app connects to the Amazon FireTV connected to the Xbox?

Bump because I'm selfish.

Really curious about the 2 questions mentioned above. Anyone got any thoughts? Especially the 2nd question listed above. Wondering how the Xbox can play OTA TV and be a passthrough to say an Amazon FireTV?

Kind of. I'll make sure to throw in some Heil's and LSD laced cocaine into my posts.

My daisy chain is Apple TV>Xbox One>Onkyo Receiver>Panasonic Plasma. Surround sound does work.

This I do not know. I would imagine it would though.

There is only 1 HDMI in on the Xbox, so you would only be able to use either the Tuner or the FireTV.

Oh really? That might be a deal breaker for me then.
But I thought the Hauppage TV tuner deal was a USB stick?

I'm looking at doing:
1) Amazon FireTV(through HDMI)>Xbox One>Pioneer Receiver>Samsung TV
2) Hauppage TV Tuner(through USB port)>Xbox One>Pioneer Receiver>Samsung TV

Would that work AND if so, I think there's a "Watch TV" app that would go to the Hauppage TV tuner but what app do you use to tunnel into your AppleTV?

as fars as I know, the Watch TV app only displays what the HDMI IN feed is. I don't think it works for USB in, I could be wrong.

I'm thinking about working backwards on my upgrading and start with an Xbox One S, then a 4k receiver + 4k TV. My dilemma is that I just don't game a lot but looking for the Xbox One S to be more of a Media Center type device.

For several years I used XBoxes on three TVs as a media device in conjunction with running a Windows Media Center server on a PC. WMC provides a program guide for free and full DVR capability. WMC is included with Windows 7 Home Premium and had limited support in Windows 8. It was discontinued with Windows 10. If you have a Windows 7 PC to dedicate to it all you need is an external tuner like the Silicon Dust HD Homerun. It delivers uncompressed MPEG2 to the XBox so you really need a hard-wired ethernet connection.

ETA: I had all XBox 360s but I'm pretty sure Xbox One also supports WMC.

Also, there are tuners that will transcode the OTA to MP4 and allow for wireless connection.

I watched this very informative video and apparently you can use both the USB in (for OTA TV) + HDMI in (for FireTV/AppleTV, etc) and they both use the "Watch TV" application.

They just simply list "HDMI IN" as a Channel, which is somewhat interesting.

I would agree with you if it were me but I'm going for simplicity for the wife + 2 kiddos.
That's my main reason for not pulling the trigger on the xbox one S is that it adds a layer (xbox one's menu) of complexity from them just clicking "ON" and watching TV.

One really dumb question is on the new xbox "home" screen, can I make the "Watch TV" tile VERY large so that it's the easy/1st thing myself, wife and kids can click? How customizable is that home screen?

No you can't. You can "pin" the app, but the pinned apps are buried at the bottom. You can set the Xbox to auto start the TV app eveytime you power the Xbox on so it's the first thing you see.

Oh nice. Ok that might be my winner then as it'd be mainly a media device for me.

Do you ever play blu rays on the xbox? Our current blu ray player is old and slow as piss. Surely the Xbox one s's has gotta be faster?!

Again I don't have hands-on experience with the XBox One but the XBox 360 had a setting to go direct to WMC when you powered it on so there were no additional menus to drill through.

BTW, I replaced the WMC/XBox system with a Tivo Bolt and three Tivo Minis. If you want simplicity, that's the way to go. I got tired of being on-call tech support 24 hours a day. And I sold the XBoxes and the tuners on e-bay for enough to pay for all of the new Tivo gear

Ha, I know that feeling. I would do the SlingTV route but the monthly subscription completely turns me off from that as an option.

It's $12.50 a month when you pay on an annual basis. The first year is included in the price of the Bolt. You pay no additional fees for the Tivo Minis. You can also get a Tivo Roamio for $399 which includes a lifetime subscription. BTW, that's the lifetime of the Tivo, not yours. It's not transferable to a new box. After using it for a year, I've come to conclude that it's worth every penny, particularly when it's for four TVs.

Consider also that the Tivos are self-contained. There are no external PCs, tuners or hard drives needed.
