I bought a Sony 4K open box back in 2015 and I'm pretty sure it's a 2014 model. From my brief research it looks like these TVs do not have HDR despite being 3480x2160, 120-240Hz.

I was going to pull the trigger on an XB1 S with the intention of purchasing 4K blurays and upscaling games (also to piss away cash). However, now I am wondering if it's worth it is worth buying if I don't have HDR. Thoughts?

To my understanding say if you were to watch a 4K movie on Xbox One S then it would be 4K. But as far as gaming goes it requires the HDR to see improvements.

That's what I gathered I think. I may be 100% wrong though.

Ahh, see I was hoping there would be upscaling for all just up to your tvs limits. I'm thinking my TV may not be worth the upgraded xbox

i'd say skip it. i just bought xbone s to primarily use as a streaming device, and honestly it doesn't matter if your tv has hdr or not, because none of the apps i use work properly.

the netflix app enables hdr once you click on it and stays on for all content whether hdr or not.

youtube doesn't stream in UHD.

amazon doesn't stream in UHD.

battlefield doesn't have an hdr pack released for it yet, even though it's advertised as hdr compatible. though it does look pretty great as is.

i'm not aware of any app that streams 4k/uhd content on xbox that actually works as it should tbh. the only nice thing i can say about it is that the UHD Blu-Ray player works as it should. So i'll hold onto the Xbone S until scorpio drops (assuming all the above issues are fixed) or sony decides to actually put a fricking UHD Blu-Ray player in their next update, and then i'll trade in or sell xbone one s.

Thanks, Phillip. That's what I'm thinking but I wouldn't mind being able to use 4k blurays. I just wasn't sure if they'd be worth it if I didn't have HDR on my tv.

Tiger, I really just use the apps on the TV. Really just Netflix. That's why I wanted to get this because I feel like outside of upscaling HD I don't use my tv for all it's worth.

If it helps my tv is a Sony xbr-800b

I have a 830C so I'm in that boat with you. I'm not a gamer so I don't know about games but I'm familiar with the UHD disc players. For me it's the cost of the disc that I can't justify. I can get the player at cost but I'm not buying $30 disc.

As far as 4K HDR vs non HDR 4K yes you can see a noticeable difference on a 10 bit panel. But if you are currently watching 1080p then you would benefit from a 4K player. Outside of UHD disc I find Amazon to have good content. Noticeable difference from the regular content and their UHD content.

Dang, I thought they were closer to bluray prices.

And that's what I was thinking too. Everything I own is basically 1080p with the exception of Netflix on the Sony app. That said, that damn Sony app is so finnicky. And now I read there is an android OS on the newer models. Really all this has led me to realize I jumped on the damn 4K bandwagon too early and that I obviously need to just buy a new TV

I wouldn't go out buying a new TV yet for that reason. Yes, the Android TV is much better than what you currently have now. Android TV is the reason why I bought mine. But you can still get by with a streaming box for now. The Fire TV works well for 4K. Until they are broadcasting live sports and such in 4K HDR I wouldn't worry about runnng out to buy a new TV.
