Would you buy a used macbook off ebay?

We already have a Mac desktop and good (brand new) macbook air for my teenager in the house. I am just looking to have an extra laptop in the house for the younger children and the wife to use for web/netflix/email purposes. The macbook airs on ebay are basically half price. Or is there anywhere else to get them for a discount? TIA

If it still works and the price is right, why not?

This is what I'm thinking but I'm not very tech savvy and have never bought a used computer before.

No. Look at Apple's refurbished ones. They come with the same warranty as all others.

I buy fairly big items off ebay all the time, and have purchased a couple of laptops without issue.
In buying anything of value, I tend to look for either a) someone with an established ebay store that thrives on keeping high ratings (and has high ratings - read them to assess validity and how they deal with issues) or b) some individual who puts up a thorough, transparent and multiple photo ad that specifically notes, in detail, any issues or defects. I actually prefer to find things with minor defects just for the sake of having something minor to disclose.
It's also nice when you have a legit story to go along with the sale ("got my wife an SP3 for Christmas, but she went back to her iPad air, blah blah blah"), but people lie and it's kind of hard to have a "rule" to operate by on that subject.
In a few hundred transactions I've never had a used product that turned out to be in worse shape than I anticipated, or that failed shortly after purchase. I've had issues on ebay, but never on that front.

Or use the Apple for Education store and get something brand new for about the same as the used one. I've bought bother refurb and through the educator store. It just depends if you want the new apple box in a gift giving situation.
