Wink gift card

Did anyone else get the email from wink about their hub getting bricked and the offer of a $50 gift card? I think they pulled it back some, because when I tried to use my code it would only give me a $25 credit, but that still got me a couple of free light bulbs.
I got a hub a few weeks ago and it wouldn't connect to anything so I was sending it back anyway, but it was cool to get the free lights, assuming I get a working hub back from them this time.

Just got mine and haven't tried it, but judging by twitter reactions a lot of folks are getting humped. Some as low as $15. The code is also limiting what items it can be used on. A lot of them are showing their personalized codes in their tweets too.

that quirky is a well-oiled machine.
and lol the big wink display is still the first thing you see when you walk into home depot..except..no hubs.

I got it. They sent a follow up saying that I can fix it myself and they will offer assistance over the phone if needed. Alternatively, I can still mail it in and they gave me a personalized $50 code and extended it through 5/22 instead of 48 hours like the generic code.
I'm curious if they are going to allow all of those orders they got with the original generic code or if they invalidated them.

Looks like a lot of things are out of stock. Not sure what to spend my $50 on.

Do you disagree that the Wink fiasco is just that? A total sh!t show that highlights what happens when tech companies are rushed to market before really lining out their product and their process, which its obvious Wink has some lingering issues with?
Simple marketing 101, brah. They put profits before product, and it'll cost them Customer Intimacy, which will mean they need to either spend vast sums to get it back, or compete like CRAZY on the price spectrum scale. Or they could just try to keep innovating. But that will be difficult as well since they just jerked their early adopter aficionados around and ruined the experience for them. Those types will be difficult to get back.

wink hardware is solid.
wink obviously has the backing of GE and home depot.
quirky is in over-their-head and quite frankly, a new product manager needs to step in and do the following:
- fire all developers
- hire a former apple or google UI/UX specialist or some developers who know what the hell they're doing and not someone who is trying to wear multiple hats and write software on the side
- reach out to all existing supported 3rd party products with a 'we're sorry' approach and promise to make their products much more robust from within the wink ecosystem
- allow both local/WiFi and cloud-based access to your home devices
- launch a major 'v2.0 we've heard you and are responding' campaign to existing customer base.
quirky/wink has a black eye because they make the wink doo-dads look like shite because of the crap-arse software they've written, dependence on the cloud servers and terrible customer support.
all fixable things with a SINGLE good hire at quirky but who knows if they've gotten the message yet.
i'm still not giving up on my wink hardware but damn they make it hard to like them.

Never unboxed mine. Threw it in the office bookcase and forgot about it.

So whats the best alternative to wink as a hub?
I'm in the market and want to get the best and not have all the issues (which I have no clue what's happening with wink)

wink's key advantage was (a) cheap..99 cents for the 3 months leading up to christmas and (b) support for just about every WiFi radio in existence (lutron, bluetooth, zigbee, zwave, WiFi, etc.)
the idea being you were no longer 'locked' into a particular eco-system, for instance if you heavily invested in lutron switches because wink would work with pretty much all connected devices...including signing deals with heavyweights like NEST, HONEYWELL, SCHLAGE, CHAMBERLAIN, etc.
in theory that made for a killer product. in reality the fact they refuse to hire quality developers have ruined this and the shitty reputation they've developed will be very hard to overcome even though 100% of the problems to date are software.
your other choices are:
- vera (couple hundred bucks and has its own issues)
- smart things (limited access to 3rd party devices)
- control4 or creston ($$$$$ not for the diy-er)
- staples connect (i know nothing about this)
- IRIS (lowe's answer to wink..but VERY limited because its being build by...lowes...lol)

Im listening to The Hard Things About The Hard Things by Ben Horowitz right now, and the whole wink launch sounds identical to how he recalls their Opswear launch. Basically the only way to figure out all the software issues was to send it to market and then fix everything that came up as fast as possible.

I've commented in two threads. Hardly constant spamming, though I encourage you to try and prove that. Don't worry, I'm sure you couldn't even if you had the appetite for trying anything more than making exaggerations like that one.
I actually think the idea itself is interesting. But the execution was terrible.

I'll be sure to check in with you before posting too much on any one subject in particular from here on out.
In other news, that emoticon has 3 Z's coming off the blue-faced sleeping dude. Anything over 1 Z's way more than enough.
Don't you agree?
