Well Microsoft doesn't sell computers, so how do you expect them to make money?

I just bought an HP laptop with Windows 8. Its going to take a little bit of time to learn it coming from a MacBook.

So far I like it. I still have my MacBook but with starting graduate school I was looking for a new computer and was not shelling out a grand!

Stick to 7 if you don't have one.

Windows 8 is much better for dual monitors

Windows 8.1 is significantly better than Windows 7. Significantly. It takes a little while to learn the differences. But, the performance is so much better. Once you learn the Windows key shortcuts, it makes life a lot easier. Plus, you can now boot directly into desktop mode. You can even set the homescreen (tiles) to show your desktop apps first instead of the Tile apps.

The Start Menu is such a slow way to use your computer. Just hit the Windows key, and start typing the name of whatever application, setting, etc. that you want to see. Then hit enter.

The Start Menu is stupid and takes forever to navigate. Microsoft has failed to educate people on how terrible it is and how they have made Windows better by removing it.

Windows 8 sucks balls. Microsoft never considers the end user, especially the business user, when designing crap like that.

That's why they're caving and returning to the familiar start menu in the next version.

Win8 is great for pads, not so great for folks who have to use a desktop or laptop without a touchscreen.

IMO, you're just wrong. Windows 8 is much easier and faster to use than Windows 7. The Start Menu is slower and takes longer to accomplish any task. Learn some shortcuts (primarily keyboard), and you will see why the Start Menu is obsolete.

Hitting the windows key and typing the name of your application or setting you want to see if much faster than using the mouse to click on start, then applications, then administrator tools, etc.

You can also still use the windows key + R to open the Run command box.

Which is easier:

1. Start Menu -> searching for Remote Desktop
2. Windows Key -> typing Remote Desktop (or mstsc if you wish)
3. Windows Key + R -> typing mstsc

The Start Menu will almost always be the least efficient, more difficult, and slowest way to do things as a user. The fact that people are used to Windows XP does not make Windows 8 suck. And, the fact that Vista sucked doesn't mean Windows 8 sucks. It really is much easier to be an IT professional since I've been using Windows 8.1.

I believe you are wrong there.

Learn some shortcuts

I know the shortcuts. And I know how to make shortcuts to anything I want on my desktop.

So place a bunch of tiles on my desktop that I don't want, have menus popping up in my way whenever my cursor strays over part of the screen accidentally -- these are ways to piss me off, and Microsoft succeeds admirably.

you don't even have to look at the tiles, ever. go to the desktop. right click the taskbar, click properties. go to the Navigation tab. Set all of those options how you would like.

I never use the Tiles, and I never look at it. My PC boots directly to desktop. Plus, some of those popup menus can be turned off with a simple unchecking or checking of a box. It really isn't that hard.

I am not wrong about the Start Menu. Functionally it is slower and less efficient. Just because you haven't learned how to use Windows 8.1 doesn't mean it isn't better than XP and/or Windows 7. It is easily much easier to use than both.

Microsoft has done a terrible job of explaining to people how to use it. They should have had commercials explaining to people how you can easily find the apps you are looking for by pressing the windows key and then just typing, instead of having to dig around the start menu.

Frick, they should've done this prior to getting rid of the Start Menu. Leave it there for 3-5 years while you educate people on how to search for apps more efficiently, then you could kill it once you've convinced everyone it is useless.

Or they could give people the option if they're comfortable with the Start menu, like 90% of my users are. Don't go changing shite without asking people what they want. That's their problem. They just do shite that they think people want.

Then users have to jump through hoops, install Classic Shell, etc. to get around all the "improvements."

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. Forcing the tiles menu was a mistake. But, they've fixed that with 8.1 and you can now easily avoid that by booting directly to the desktop. Other than that, they've been pretty much on point with their OS changes.

Windows 8.1 is the best desktop/tablet Operating System that exists today. And, I say that from my Macbook Pro and I'm about to go jump on the iPad for my lunch break.
