I got it downloaded & installed. But when it goes to the start option it crashes.

Any suggestions/advice? I'm an old fart & a computer novice so go easy on me.

Do you mean the point after you start your computer and it shows the "window" logo but before you try to do anything like log in?

I download it, install it, and after it says 100% installed, the screen goes to a start routine. That's when it crashes. Thanks

Hum... I'm still not 100% sure as to what stage of startup it is crashing at; but that may not make a difference.

Have you tried a hard off/on cycle? Either completely shut down your machine, give it a moment, then turn it back on, OR unplug your machine, give it a moment, then plug it back in and try starting it.

report?

I just started the process again. I'll let you know what it says shortly.

Microsoft released its latest cumulative updates for Windows 10 this past Tuesday. KB 3194798, which brings Windows 10 Anniversary Update version 1607 up to OS Build 14393.321, continues to generate all sorts of complaints. Chief among them: It still won't install on many machines.

It says "Setup couldn't start properly. Please reboot your PC and try running Windows 10 setup again."

So, is it not actually installed/setup yet? You've just downloaded the "update program" and have yet to get it to run?

This happened on my bedroom PC and I just deleted the download and started the entire process over again...

... I'm not at my PC now (on a mac at work) but as I recall the easiest way to get rid of the download is to right click on your main hard drive icon, select properties, then disk cleanup, then select "clean up system files" (not sure what is actually called, but it should be in the lower portion of this window and it might be a blue link). Make sure at this point that you've clicked the box next to windows update files. Click OK, yes you're sure, OK, whatever else to get it to actually do it.

After it runs and clears up those files, go to the system settings and the update section and force it to start again.

Thanks to all for their suggestions. I've tried them with no success. I'm going to hold off on trying again. Maybe Bill can get the bugs worked out.

Thanks.

Did you have any difficulty installing it?

There are widespread problems with PCs that are running with a SSD and a separate HDD for data. Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and tried to downplay the number of users affected. So far there is no fix for it AFAIK. I'm about to pull my SSD and revert back to a HDD only.

Didn't know & explains why my SSD laptop would not update.

I just bought a used HP Elitebook 8760W with SSD and HDD. Fresh Windows 10 install. How do I turn off updates so it doesn't automatically download the anniversary update?

They don't make it easy but here's a workaround.

Guess I have been lucky. My laptop updated to the anniversary update a few weeks ago when it released and has run at least 2 cumulative updates since then with no problems.
