Got the kids a Wii U for Christmas (thought about waiting but Nintendo missed the Christmas deadline). Thinking about storage space is only 32GB, what is the best option for extra storage: USB hard drive or network drive? Any other suggestions of connecting?

In my experience, if I were you, I wouldn't worry about it. They'll be bored with it soon, anyway.

i have one, but have not gone the extra storage route yet. from what i have read, easiest thing is to buy a small storage drive and plug directly to it.

they suggest an external drive that has its own power source. I used a flash drive one time, and it seemed okay. It actually seemed to work better than the usb powered external drive I have hooked up to it currently.

I upgraded my ps4 hard drive. Took the 500gb from the ps4, put it in the plastic case the new one came in and I just plugged it into the Wii u via USB.
