Why is my MicroSD card write protected?

No matter what I try, I cannot write to my MicroSD card. I figured this out when my internal storage on my S5 was full but I couldn't move anything over to my external MicroSD. Even when I plug it into an USB adapter and then into my computer it is still write protected.

I was in the process of removing all files so I can format, but I can't even do that (format).

There's s little switch on the side of the card that you inadvertently put in the read-only position.

I'm talking about MicroSD, which doesn't have that switch....at least the one I am using. I am familiar with the switch on the larger regular SD cards and adapters.

Yes it does, but I don't have the adapter. I just have the Micro SD card and it is write protected. I am currently plugging it into my computer using a USB adapter with a MicroSD slot on it. It is also write protected when trying to access through my phone using an android file explorer. I can't move files/folder or create new folder on the external MicroSD.

I guess I don't see how the MicroSD card can be write protected if I am not using the SD card adapter.

Hopefully that makes sense.

ETA:

I did find through Google that it actually may be the MicroSD card going bad.

I had one do something similar. I think you just have to get what you can off it and buy a new one.

Cool. Good to know.

New and larger ones are dirt cheap so I might as well upgrade.

Partially corrupted I believe. I had that issue not long ago.
copied contents to another drive then formatted and it's been fine since.

Mine would only mount if it was switched to read-only. Any attempt to mount it read-write failed, so I couldn't format or anything.

This may be the case. About halfway through copying over the files (which took a unusually long time) I could somehow magically delete files/create folders. I finished copying everything over to my PC then was able to reformat. Works great now and is super quick. This SD card hasn't been formatted for probably 3-4 phone upgrades so maybe it just needed wiped.

well, there is that

AND

you may want to reboot the computer
I've had it happen at various times the computer misread the chip

and so a reboot snapped it out of it....

FWIW, microcenter has excellent house brand chips/micro sd

I guess I could have tried that, but the MicroSD was write protected according to two PCs and the phone itself. Pretty sure that wasn't the problem.

Thanks. I ended up going with a $13 32GB card from amazon. Can't beat two day shipping.

Price must have went up after I bought it because now it's at $16.50. Cost me $12.99.
