So here's the story. My Vizio went out the other day (had a perfect picture) due to power surges. I went and bought a LG 55" yesterday and hook it all up and mounted it on the wall. (tip- dont mount TVs until you actually plug it in and watch it for a bit)

nevertheless, there are these white speckled dots all of the screen when watching the cable box. Wifi apps and xBox are fine. You can really see them on the black parts of the picture. I adjusted sharpness and everything else, still there.

I moved HDMI cables around to make sure there wasnt interference from elec cords. no go.

I guess my next step is to try a new HDMI cable, which i pray is not the problem because its all run through the walls and will be a BITCH to re-run.

Cable box maybe?

ETA-i just dont think it's the TV because it works fine on all other sources. And i really dont want to take it down to take it back if thats not the problem.

its likely not the hdmi cable but using an hdmi dongle on a different hdmi input on the tv will rule out alot of possibilities.

hey, you mentioned built-in apps above. are you seeing white spots with those? they don't use any inputs.

nope. only from the cable box, everything else is fine which i imagine tells me it's either the hdmi cable, hdmi port, or the cable box. Would you agree?

Check your cable TV cable connections including the splitter inside the cable box on the side of your house. If all connections are solid then trade in the cable box for a new one.

Move your existing HDMI cable to another input and see what happens

Gotcha, will do.

to the other poster, all connections seem fine. Plus, the other TVs in the house work as normal and are running off the same input cable so i would image the issue is somewhere between the main box and the TV.

Long shot but also check what resolution and refresh rate is coming in on that input. It's possible there's an odd setting in there somewhere that's causing picture degradation. I think I set my TV to 2160p and it will drop to 1080p automatically.

Brand new tv so i'm not that familiar with it, but going through all of the settings i could not find anyway to switch the res. maybe im wrong though.

hit the 'display' or whatever its called that gives you a little box in the corner with the resolution. i think it usually shows up for a couple seconds when you switch input. should say 1080p. i think you can set it to 1080p or 2160p or 720p or 'auto' but LG may be different.

does LG have a 'pic mode' button on the remote? try hitting it a few times (game, movie, dark, etc.) which changes all kinds of pic settings and *may* help.

also your cox cable box likely has some settings within it. can you access your cable menu settings with your cox remote? it may be what's messed up. last resort, hit the 'reset settings' option on the cable box and see if that clears out the problem.

these are all guesses. i'd start with changing the hdmi input on the tv.

If the power surge jacked up the vizio it is clearly possible it jacked up the cable box as well.

Makes sense to me. Bought another cable today and will try the suggestions already stated. Next step is a new cable box.

Well, I used a new HDMI cable and it cleared it up instantly.

I didn't realize it, but my Comcast box has been on 720 the whole time I've had it. The old cable wouldn't even play 1080p, only 1080I and it still had the white speckled.

Now I just have to figure out how to fish a new 50ft cable through my walls lol.

Thanks guys. Guess the storm messed my wall cable up?

people always forget to make sure the cable box is set to 1080p.

Monoprice sells thin redmere HDMI cables good for inside walls
