WD external hard drive not working

I haven't used it in a while . I plugged it in earlier to try to copy some files off of it and they wouldn't copy. I tried on 3 different computers and same result? Any suggestions? I'm not worried about keeping the files as much as the hard drive.

Does that mean your computer recognizes the drive and you can see the drive/directories/files on the drive? If so, what message do you get when you try to copy the files?

Actually, it recognized the files earlier but whenever I tried to copy the computer would freeze. Now whenever I plug in, the light comes on, but I can't explore the files.

Seen something like this a couple of times. On some older externals my company had, the external power supplies (not USB powered units) on several units were faulty. I happened to have one of the units that worked and we figured that my PS worked on others that didn't work with their original PS. More likely you have a USB powered unit. My typical experience with these is that the controller board on the unit has failed. If you have any items on the drive you want to keep, you could get an USB to SATA/IDE converter for under $50, probably close to $20. You would have to take the external HD apart, usually not that hard. Pretty good chance you could find someone to do that for you for under $50 as well.

I have an older model a lot like this and that should work. Keep in mind there is still the possibility that the hard drive is bad, its just my experience that it is usually the controller and not the drive itself unless it has been thrown across the room.
If all you want is a working external, it would probably be faster and maybe even cheaper to just buy a new external, depending on the size you have now.
This one looks like it's available at every BestBuy between Beaumont and Gulfport
$59 WD 1TB Drive

I just tried with a new cable and same result. I noticed it makes a clicking noise for about 30 seconds after I plug it in .

That is not a good sign. It could mean you have a mechanical issue with the drive or it could still mean you have a controller issue, one that is related to head position/alignment/travel.
Get a new drive looks more and more like the best option.

and, how old is the drive?
I've copied stuff from old drives several times, many times I needed to use the powered type, the usb would not cut the mustard
good luck

Do you have anything else plugged into your usb ports?
They could be lowering the power available to the external hard drive.
Unplug all USB items and try the ehd again.

I assume that wasn't the case because he tried 3 different computers but it's def worth investigating.

2.5 years or so. I have a few that are older.

no
IDK if this matters, but the light is still blinking on the drive whenever I plug it in to the computer.

You might try seeing if you computer sees the disk in the disk management tool.
from the run dialog type in (or copy) diskmgmt.msc and hit enter. It should pop up the Disk Management Console. Look to see if you see your drive If it shows up but doesnt have a drive letter, then you will need to assign it a drive letter. That seems unlikely but worth looking at.

I'm looking to replace with a 4 or 5 tb hard drive. Do you recommend desktop or portable? My IT friend recommended a desktop. I've been reading reviews on Amazon of Seagate and Western Digital desktops and they have a lot of negative reviews.
