I am intrigued by the idea of "building in" an iPad to serve as a Home Automation/Family hub. This is a relatively inexpensive DIY project that will allow my home automation project to be future proof.

My question is this. The Home Button will not be accessible, and I don't want the screen to be on all of the time. Is there a way to wake up an iOS device without using the physical buttons?

ETA: LINK

This is exactly what I need to do, but it looks like this requires the iPad to be jailbroken. Not sure I want to get into that.

Not with an iPad...

There are other tablets out there that are cheaper and can wake up by double-tapping the screen.

Namely? I'm not opposed to leaving the Apple ecosystem for this, provided I can find a flush mount.

Building in any tablet is a bad idea IMO. In 4 years it will be slow as molasses.

ETA: not to mention security vulnerabilities that won't be patched on older models.

In this application the iPad is simply a device to interface with the control system. It's not going to be any slower in 4 years because it only serves one function. The programming is done outside of the iPad on the actual control system which the iPad communicates with via wifi. It just has a program on it that acts as an interface. They're just button clicks.

It could stream music as well to the system but that's no big deal. The control system however is a big deal and most with this type of interface are expensive.

Tell that to my iPad 3. Sometimes it takes >1 minute to just launch safari. I've pretty much given up on the Kindle app.

I get that. The difference is that for this device there would never be a reason to do the Apple updates that slow older devices.

Until the app you use requires a newer OS version.
