I am trying Ooma and have an alarm system. Anyone have trouble getting alarm system to work with Voip? Any suggestions? Oma says call alarm co. Alarm co says voip tone if causing the trouble?

just get a cellular alarm system. the people who installed mine (last month) said that is all they do now anyway because it is more secure.

Usually not compatible. You have to have an analog line.

I have a stand-alone cellular gateway dedicated to my alarm system and it works great. The alarm system itself is old and can't be upgraded with a cellular board.

I use this LEVITON unit but it is several years old. There are newer products available that are much less expensive.

How does the cellular thing work? Another line to pay for?

I had an issue when I first got Uverse VOIP in 2009. I did some research online and they said to swap the phone wires in the alarm box if it didn't work. Well that's all the ADT guy said he did and it worked.

We just did ours and I think we may be paying a little more per month for cell, but it comes with remote access (apps) and such which I wanted anyway.

I could never get mine to work with Vonage. I went with a company that will do monitor over IP called Eyez-on. Also gives you the ability to turn it on/off and see which zones are tripped using the web. Obviously it won't work if my internet goes out, but neither does VOIP. I think it's also less money than my old service.

Do you know what brand alarm you have? Honeywell, DSC, GE, etc. Also, are you under contract with your monitoring company? The Eyez-on board works with Honeywell and DSC panels. LINK

I got a T-Mobile pay-as-you-go number and and loaded it with $100 for 1000 minutes that last for a year. After that a $10 annual top-off extends the minutes for another year.

The gateway comes with a small internal battery but I added an external UPS to keep it working during an extended power outage.

This looks very interesting for a rental property that I have. Do you have any links to newer/cheaper models?

I found some on e-bay for under a hundred bucks but they're no-brand models. The Ericsson G30 will work but it seems to be sold only outside the U.S. There are a number of inexpensive docking stations for cell phones but only a few that support an internal SIM card. The Leviton unit may still be the best option despite the price. You can do a google search for a fixed GSM wireless terminal and see what you can find.

I did come across this on Amazon and it might be worth taking a chance on.

i think the typical surcharge is around $5/mo if it is built into your system. i don't know anything about the add ons the other posters have mentioned. mine was installed by a local company and there is no additional cost over landline systems

When you get a cellular system integrated with your alarm box, it piggybacks on the command and control frequencies of the cellular network common to all carriers. The alarm monitoring company then charges you for this in addition to their regular monitoring fee. There is no "line" in the traditional sense. One alternative is to use a cellular gateway to provide an analog dial tone to the alarm system; this arrangement eliminates the need for a monthly fee but requires that you maintain a regular pay-as-you-go cell line.
