So my wife (long time iphone user) finally jumped ship to android. She has a G3 and has been loving it. However, today she started bitching about the inability to text videos. I tried to explain to her its a limitation with MMS, not the phone. With the video/camera quality of today's phones, the video file sizes are just too large to send over MMS along with carrier limitations too. She then threw the old "my iphone didn't have a problem sending video" gripe at me. I tried to tell her that the videos I would get from her were compressed down to the size of a quarter and more pixelated than soft core porn (she laughed). She then said her friends with iphones got the videos fine. I told her it was due to imessage, although I'm not sure that was correct.

Anyways, is there ANYTHING I can do to help her out with sending video? Dropbox sucks as it takes a year to upload a simple 30 second video. I tried it last night and she will not go for that as she is a) female and b) impatient as hell. She wants a simple solution where she can video my kids and text it to someone immediately. Lofty expectations that woman…..

I can't even send a Gif on my S4.

Why people are switching from IOS to Android is beyond me.

The last year has been frustration after frustration. I am so done with the platform.

SMS and MMS have the same limitations on both platforms.

Android allows you to be far more productive and efficient, if you want it to be.

Your frustration with SMS/MMS on Android stems from the fact that Apple hijacks your phone number on iOS to use iMessage, the equivalent to which is Hangouts on Android. While Apple's method does give a more 'seamless' experience, it causes problems when attempting to switch platforms. And that's how they like it, apparently.

you sound like a woman. There is nothing wrong with the Android platform. Its leaps and bounds better than iOS, but that is just an opinion coming from someone who has had years of experience on both platforms. If you are basing your opinion on Android solely on the ability to send video MMS, then maybe you should go back to iOS.

This wasn't a gripe thread about the issue. I was asking some of the more experienced users of Android what they do for video messaging. Although I am very seasoned on this OS, I do not send video messages ever. So I was looking to gain some input on the subject.

The wife loves her phone and does not want to go back. She just misses being able to share video.

You'd be right. I'm not sure what the limitation is on iMessage, but it's got to be at least 100 MB.

Never tried hangouts. I hear a lot of people like it and prefer it over textra. Can you send video with hangouts?

Line is also good for video. Not sure how large of a file you can upload, but I have no problem with 2+ min vids in 720p. Doesn't support gifs tho for some reason

I don't see an option to send video in hangouts.

NM. I didn't have it set as default app. I sent a 45 second video, but it was pixelated pretty bad.

Oh frick, you're right. Hangouts only lets you send videos via MMS.

Yep. Hence the terrible quality. There has to be a better option.

About the only option I've seen is to email the video instead.

You should be able to change the settings on your camera to fix the issue, but it causes the quality of the video you take to suffer. But, you should be able to go into the phone's camera and click on the video quality settings (video settings and photo settings should be separate). Her current video quality settings are probably set to HD (or something similar - whatever the highest level for the phone is). There should be the option to change the quality to "MMS" or something that changes the quality for text availability (the setting is called MMS on my phone).

Changing this formats & resizes the videos you take to a file that can be sent in a text messages but, like I said, lowers the quality of all videos you take.

And this is for all videos going forward. You cant change the quality of the videos you've already taken(at least I haven't figured out how). So she is out of luck on the videos she is currently trying to send.

I have an HTC M7, fwiw. So not sure your phone has the same settings...

Yes. I understand all that as I have played around with it, but she's looking to maintain iOS imessage functionality which I told her is not happening. She is torn because she loves Android and is learning more everyday, but this is just one of those features she really misses since most of her friends/coworkers have iphones. Women.
