Thoughts on Surface Pro 4?

I am looking to buy the entry level Surface Pro 4 (Core M3, 128GB SSD, 4GB RAM) to help me with school work. I can get it for $800 (tablet) + $80 (keyboard) = $880 at BHPhotoVideo which ships to my state without sales tax.

I will be mostly using it for MS Office applications, web browsing and maybe streaming Netflix once in a while. I think the Core M3 be able to handle my use case. Are there areas you see where the tablet could struggle?

The reason I want to get the Core M3 is because I don't want a tablet with a fan. I have read too many reviews online of the SP3 & SP4 (Core i5/i7) fans being a little too quick to turn on.

I have the $900 one, got it off newegg, and i like it a lot. Haven't put it through its paces yet. The fan does turn on quickly but its not loud. For watch you want to do the m3 will be fine.

I've had a 3 for a year now and still love it. Don't expect to use it as a high-performance gaming machine but it's great for almost everything else.

If that's all you'll use it for, then why spend ~$900 for that when you can buy a laptop from walmart/online for ~$300-500?

If you're gonna invest in that then you might as well get in there with the i5. Seems like you're willing to drop a chunk of change just to say you have one; or a piece you can show of as a status sybmol while surfing free wifi hotspots.

I have the i7/1TB/16g and love it. Went to a Surface user site and picked up a few "fixes" to improve battery life, etc. Great screen and very portable.

M3 should be fine for your use. The biggest difference isn't its top speed, but simply active vs. passive cooling as you said. i5s/i7s in the SP start off with higher base clocks, so active cooling will kick on with the slightest hint of activity. M3 operates a lot like other tablet and phone CPUs. Extremely dynamic frequency. Touch the screen and scroll for a few seconds, CPU ramps up, then idles down the minute you stop touching the screen. There aren't too many tasks that require a CPU's full attention the entire time, but nevertheless, it's those tasks that require an active cooled CPU.

The part I don't like about the M3 version is the 4GB of RAM. PC makers need to cut that shite out. It does, however, make the i5/4GB a semi-attractive option by comparison.

Do you guys find the 12" screen comfortable to use on a daily basis? Is it too small to use as a primary computer?

The resolution is good for document work like you'll be doing for school. So it should be fine. The resolution, however, creates scaling issues with some programs which leave you with incredibly tiny menus.

I use my surface like 5-8 hours a day, and I don't have any issues with the size. In fact, I think it's nearly the perfect size for a device that's useful, yet mobile.

Great. What is the battery life like on it? Also, how comfortable do you find the tablet when attached to the type keyboard for typing long periods of time? Can you prop it up on your lap when sitting on the bed for example and type comfortably?

Agreed though. Why on such an expensive machine are they gonna do that Bush League crap? I still want to get the Surface Book but it's nearly $3k and the only one with 16gb RAM is that one. Thankfully my current laptop is running smooth since installing the SSD so I have a bit to wait on it and hopefully better pricing and better options with more RAM.

Yeah, I just want 8GB. 16GB would be a waste for me. I'm more than likely going to end up with a Dell XPS 13 for lack of better options. I don't need the tablet-centric functionality of the SP4, and I can't afford the surface book.

Just ordered my base SP4 with Core m3 processor, 128 GB storage and 4 GB RAM.

Got it from BHP photo video for $799 (tablet) + $80 (type keyboard) = $879. No sales tax for my state. The tablet was $100 off for President's Day and I got a $50 discount for the keyboard for buying it together with the tablet as a bundle. I thought it was a pretty decent deal.

Battery life is going to be 5-6, depending how you use it. If you're in class you may get 7-8 if you aren't constantly surfing the web.

I haven't had any issues with finding comfortable positions to use it. There are limitations though. That said it also has the bonus of not getting your lap hot because the CPU isn't in the base. There's a lot of give and take with the device. You just have to accept that going in.
