Ok, I figured I'd come here to ask this question as I know a lot of you have both. In short, I have rewards points that I can use to get gift cards and need to know which I should use the cards on:
1) A 30-40 inch TV for my outdoor deck
2) A Wifi thermostat (probably ecobee3)

The reason I ask is I have a feeling I'd use the wifi thermostat a lot more and enjoy it more than the tv for back deck. But does anyone have both and use (1) more than (2) or vice versa?

1st world problems man...

I'd get the ecobee and then just wait for a good opportunity to pick up a tv.

TVs, especially of the type you're talking about, are practically disposable these days. Hell, mention you need a 30-40 inch TV for the deck enough and someone might just give you one.

Thanks. Thinking it might be my best bet on cost-benefit. I can see me using the wireless ecobee multiple times daily whereas the TV may only be 1-2 times a week outside.

Pettifogger, have you ever installed one? Hopefully it's not rocket science but I'd hate to screw up my A/C unit for a damn thermostat.

Money Talk answer would be to buy what will save you money before something that will cost you money. TVs always drop in price.

I've installed a Honeywell wifi thermostat, and it was pretty easy. I had to connect an extra wire to my inside a/c unit though. How old is your house? Take the current thermostat off the wall and see how many wires are in the bundle. If it's 4, you'll have more work to do than if it's 5.

i installed one last weekend in about 30 mins. i had never installed a thermostat before, but i'm somewhat familiar with electrical wiring and general construction stuff. it is pretty much idiot proof though - they even give you little labels for your wires.

i'd go with ecobee. you can get an outside tv for $150. ecobee is $250. no brainer to me

Was completely re-done before we bought it in 2012, so pretty new. Has a newer AC unit (~4 yrs old). I'll look for 4 wires or 5.

Ok, one last question for y'alls expertise. It appears I have the following colored wires running to my current Thermostat. Will ecobee3 work with these?

-White (Connected to current thermostat)
-Red (Connected to current thermostat)
-Yellow (Connected to current thermostat)
-Green (Connected to current thermostat)
-Blue
-Black
-Brown

That's a ton of damn wires and the Blue, Black and Brown are all just chillin' and definitely not connected to current thermostat. Will my wires work with ecobee3?

Yeah I'm sure you will be fine. When i hooked up my smart thermostat (honeywell, not ecobee) all the wires that were in use went into the same spots on the honeywell. Only required one extra wire called the c-wire. And it was in the back chilling like your additional wires.

New house like yours will certainly be wired for the ecobee.

You've got wires, so that's good. You may need to connect one of the unused wires to your A/C unit. Honeywell uses 5 wires, and my old thermostat used 4 wires. I had a 5 wire pack in the wall, but the 5th wire wasn't connected to either side. It was pretty simple to do.

Same. My fifth wire had to be connected at the thermostat as well as at the a/c unit in the attic.
